Hunter Zabar Visiting Artist Stanley Whitney Presents Public Lecture at the Lang

The internationally acclaimed artist Stanley Whitney spoke at Hunter on Wednesday, September 9. This lecture was the first on the Fall 2015 calendar of Judith Zabar Visiting Artist Series.

Whitney is known for his groundbreaking, intensely color-based abstract paintings. His work has been exhibited throughout the United States and Europe, and is in museum and private collections worldwide. He is professor emeritus of painting and drawing at Temple University. The Studio Museum in Harlem is currently presenting his highly praised exhibition Dance the Orange.

In a glowing review of that exhibition, The New York Times observed that Whitney, "with a freehand geometry and a fierce and extensive range of color, found his way to a painting style all his own, one that neither stops history in its tracks nor repeats it, but has quietly and firmly expanded abstraction's possibilities of both form and meaning."

The Judith Zabar Visiting Artist Program brings leading artists to campus to present public lectures and work directly with students in Hunter's MFA program in master classes, critical seminars and private tutorials. Whitney presented his lecture at the Lang Recital Hall, in Hunter's North Building on East 69th Street between Lexington and Park Avenues. The event was free and open to students, faculty and the general public.
