Hunter's Integrated Media Arts MFA to be Showcased at the DOC NYC film festival

DOC NYC, the largest documentary film festival in America, has invited Hunter's Integrated Media Arts MFA program to participate in its lauded programming as part of "DOC NYC - U," a day dedicated to screenings from top graduate film programs like NYU, Columbia, and the School of Visual Arts. DOC NYC, which arrived on the film festival scene in 2010, quickly cemented its reputation as a center of challenging, ambitious work; MovieMaker Magazine celebrated it as one of the "top five coolest documentary film festivals in the world." Over eight days of programming, November 10-17, the festival will showcase vital new achievements in filmmaking, as well as panels and special speakers.

IMA's contribution to "DOC NYC - U" is a 69-minute program of 9 short films by current students and recent alums, selected by a panel of alums and faculty from a large pool of excellent submissions:

I See You (18 min., Orian Barki) unpacks sexting among teenagers. Tatyana Fazlalizadeh: Art in Action (2016, 3 min., Sekiyah Dorsett) profiles the work of a social justice artist. One for the Road (2016, 11 min., Fernanda Faya)  As she moves from Brazil to NY, the filmmaker looks back at her grandma's migration as a way to find traces of her own identity.  A turning point in a woman's life is captured in Eva & Moe (2016, 8 min., Lizzie Warren). A New Yorker sets out to realize her dream of owning a farm in The Beekeepers' Keeper (2016, 7 min., Megan Rossman, Samantha Farinella). Hansu Solo (2016, 8 min., Emily Collins, Kaija Siirala) offers an intimate portrait of a woman in an assisted living home. A tight-knit group of Bronx low-riders face the ghosts of their past gang life in Pelon (2016, 4 min., Lindsey Cordero, Armando Croda). Blue (2016, 5 min., Claudia Zamora) takes in the sounds, shapes and colors of Coney Island, while Against the Wind (2016, 9 min., Christopher Nostrand, Tomasz Gubernat) profiles weather-hardened ice yachters on the Hudson River.

IMA is also represented in the DOC NYC festival by three other contributions:

Mr. Chibbs, directed by current student Jill Campbell, depicts the personal and professional challenges facing retired NBA All-Star Kenny Anderson, and will receive its world premiere at the SVA Theatre. Girls and Boys, an observational portrait of a woman in Brooklyn who teaches Polish folk dancing to young students, will screen as part of a series of short films set in and celebrating New York - and was produced, directed, shot, and edited by current student Tomasz Gubernat, with sound by another current student, Kaija Siirala. And finally, alum Dierdre Fishel has directed a feature film called Care, which exposes the entrenched flaws in our country's eldercare system by telling the stories of caregivers and struggling families; Fishel began working on this film during her time in the IMA program.

The IMA showcase will screen on Friday, November 11th, at 10:15 a.m. at the IFC Center, 323 6th Avenue - for more information and tickets:
