O, The Oprah Magazine, Features Hunter MFA Alumna Abbey Ryan

O, The Oprah Magazine, has named painter Abbey Ryan, a Hunter alumna (MFA 2007), an “up and coming artisan” and featured her in its February 2011 issue. The magazine focuses on the paintings that Ryan posts daily on her website--paintings that primarily show food such as tangerines, grapes, figs, and doughnuts. Explains Ryan, “Fruit and vegetables have a living energy about them that inspires me. Also, every one is different.”

Ryan’s daily oil painting practice is inspired by Italian and Dutch masters she studied in Europe and is part of the daily routine dedicated to her artwork. Her most recent still life paintings incorporate ceramic bottles and bowls from ceramist Jury Smith’s collection. “Like fruit,” she says, “handmade objects are unique.” In addition to her traditional oil painting, Ryan creates abstract works on paper with Sumi ink or tea.

Reacting to the national coverage in O, The Oprah Magazine, Ryan says, “I’m a little bit in shock, but every day I aim to focus on how fortunate I am that I spend my time doing what I love.”
