Peter Carey Nominated for Nation’s Top Literary Prize

Peter Carey, executive director of Hunter’s MFA program in creative writing, is a finalist for the National Book Award in fiction for his widely praised new novel, Parrot and Olivier in America.  It is the latest in a long list of honors for Carey, who is one of only two living authors to win the prestigious Man Booker Prize twice and who was on the short list for this year’s Booker.

Parrot and Olivier in America is a fictionalized account of Alexis de Tocqueville’s celebrated travels in the United States in the early 1830s. In a review in The New York Times, fellow novelist Thomas Mallon said the book “grabs its subject and marches down Main Street playing full out, provoking a reader’s delighted applause.” He added, “Carey’s writing remains matchlessly robust.”

Established in 1950 by a consortium of publishers, the National Book Awards are considered the nation's preeminent literary prize.
