Dr. John P. Preece is Professor of Communication Sciences at Hunter College, also holding appointments as Professor of Audiology and of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences at the CUNY Graduate Center. Dr Preece holds degrees from Northwestern University and the University of Iowa. His primary area of scholarship has been in cochlear implants, in particular speech understanding through implants and, recently, in localization of sound sources by cochlear implant users. He also has interests in management of tinnitus and hearing in non-human species.
At the present time, Dr. Preece only teaches courses in the Audiology program. These have included: Acoustics and Psychoacoustics; Speech and Language Science; Physiological Acoustics Tinnitus; Cochlear Implants; Hearing and Aging; and Adult Aural Rehabilitation.
Dr Preece served as a site visitor for the Council on Academic Accreditation for 8 years. He is on the planning committee for the 2010 ASHA conference in Philadelphia. He has been Associate Editor of the American Journal of Audiology and had been on the publications board of the American Academy of Audiology. Dr. Preece is a Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
