KUDOS! Professor Lei Xie Awarded $1.3 Million Grant to Develop New Computational Methods for Drug Discovery

NIH (National Institutes of Health) Award Hunter Computer Science Professor Grant to Develop New Computational Methods for Drug Discovery.

Lei Xie, Associate Professor in Computer Science, was awarded a $1,300,000 NIH grant for a study on integrating big data technology with mechanism-based multi-scale modeling of biological systems. The techniques developed will be applied to develop new therapeutics for drug-resistance infectious diseases. The emergence of superbugs that are resistant to the last-resort antibiotics poses a serious threat to human health. New approaches are urgently needed to control drug-resistant pathogens and to reduce the emergence of drug resistant microbes. This project will determine the molecular targets of bioactive compounds and existing drugs on a genome scale, and repurpose approved drugs as safe anti-infective agents.
