5-YEAR BA/MA DANCE DEGREE

The 5-Year BA/MA Dance Education Degree is designed to attract highly motivated students who are interested in a career in dance education and who wish to prepare themselves with a solid liberal arts undergraduate degree and certification to teach. Candidates will demonstrate potential for growth in dance artistry (technique, improvisation, choreography and performance), as well as academic success. The 5-year BA/MA program allows students to complete both their undergraduate and graduate degrees in Dance Education through a consolidated plan of study.  

All 5-Year BA/MA applicants must apply to Hunter College and be admitted.  Students must meet with a Dance advisor and declare a Dance Major during their upper freshman year.  After completion of 65 undergraduate credits, students must apply to the School of Education for admission AND the Dance Program for admission to the 5-Year BA/MA program.  

Purpose:

• To provide a vital liberal-arts-based training in the creative, physical, and intellectual aspects of the art form of dance. 
• To prepare dance artist/educators for the demands of teaching the art, history, culture, and practice of dance in Pre-K-12 schools. 
• To lead students directly toward initial certification for dance teaching in New York City and New York State public schools, and after 3 years of full-time teaching, to professional certification.

• To cultivate excellence in pedagogical skills as well as artistry.
• To cultivate students' empowerment as cultural leaders in the arts of this state and the country as a whole.
• To establish a dynamic graduate program focused on creating a community of highly qualified dance educators for the Pre-K-12 school environment in New York City and New York State.
• To serve a diverse population of students drawn from a culturally heterogeneous population.
• To create an artistically and educationally lively interaction among four dance degree programs: the current liberal-arts-based BA, a new MA/Dance Ed, a new MFA/Dance, and the BA/MA/Dance Ed.
• To nurture a culturally, artistically and politically up-to-date understanding of the field of dance.

The MA IN DANCE EDUCATION

Purpose:

• To prepare dance artist/educators for the demands of teaching the history, culture, and practice of dance in Pre-K-12 curricula and to provide students with the course work required for professional certification for dance teaching in New York State. 
• The central tenet of this program is that the best educators of the arts must be expert scholars and practitioners in order to be truly effective in the classroom.  The Pre-K-12 environment deserves an infusion of educators with truly global understandings and expertise with the art form itself as well its pedagogy.
•  TRACK 1 will include graduate courses in the Hunter College School of Education and training in dance pedagogy, technique, aesthetics, somatics, history, and choreography in the graduate Dance Program at Hunter College. 
• TRACKS 2 and 3 will include graduate courses in the Hunter College Dance Program covering pedagogy, technique, aesthetics, somatics, history and choreography.

• TRACK 1:  Applicants must have a liberal arts bachelor's degree with a minimum of 34 credits in dance that satisfies the general education requirements in the Graduate School of Education at Hunter College.
• TRACK 2:  Applicants must have initial K-12 certification in Dance from New York State.
• TRACK 3:  Applicants must have initial or permanent/professional certification in a field other than dance and a minimum of 34 credits in dance.

• Applicants must provide a DVD or link to 1-3 clips of your creative work-between 5 and 15 minutes in total.  No promo reels please:  we are interested in seeing and hearing your individual creative voice as demonstrated in your work.
• Applicants will be required to participate in a movement audition which consists of a contemporary based warm-up as well as group and solo improvisatory exercises:  we are looking for artists who collaborate and are invested in the future of the art form.
• Applicants must provide an updated CV.
• Applicants who meet criteria based on submitted materials and the movement audition will be invited to an individual interview with the dance program admissions committee.
