History/Sharing the Legacy

Professor Emerita Dorothy M. Vislocky formed the Hunter College Dance Company in 1963. She conceived and developed the curriculum for the dance major program, emphasizing creative aspects of choreographing and performing. She directed the program from 1972 to 1986 and taught courses in creative process and anatomy and kinesiology. An original member of the Alwin Nikolais Dance Company from 1952 to 1962, she choreographed and directed the Dorothy Vislocky Dance Theater from 1963 to 1984.

"Sharing the Legacy"
"Sharing the Legacy" at Hunter College is an ongoing series that addresses the challenges involved in preserving historically significant dance and introduces the next generation of dancers to their artistic heritage. Previous "Sharing the Legacy" events include the:

Past Performances
The Hunter College Dance Program is dedicated to dance as a performing art. The opportunities to choreograph and perform are extensive. During the academic year, the students at Hunter produce 15 to 20 performances of over 30 choreographic works. These pieces range from first time student works to the Harkness Choreographer in Resident to Legacy works. Past flyers: 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2010.
