Carol K. Walker

As Dean of the School of the Arts and Dean of Dance at Purchase College, State University of New York, Carol K. Walker had a distinguished international career that carried her around Europe, Australia and Asia. She was artistic director of the renowned Purchase Dance Corps for 23 years and toured the Purchase Dance Corps, often as the sole invited company from the USA, to Beijing, Taiwan, Holland, France, Hong Kong and the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. She has been an adjudicator of major international competitions, festivals, and programs and challenges worldwide, a curriculum and program evaluator in the United States and abroad, is a keynote speaker and major presenter at conferences, symposiums, and festivals. She is sought after as a member of national and international validation teams. Ms. Walker established 7 international student exchange programs, degree completion programs and visiting scholar programs for Purchase College with institutions and colleagues throughout the world.  She served as Dean of the prestigious, highly competitive, professional training BFA Degree program in the School of the Arts from 1984 - 2007. 

After 23 years as Dean of Dance at Purchase College in NY, Walker stepped down from that role and from 2007 to 2012 she was the Professor of Dance, Coordinator of the MFA Degree program, international consultant and continued with donor relations for the Purchase College Conservatory of Dance. She had founded and continued to coordinate the MFA Degree program, taught the 4 semester MFA Dance History sequence, Pedagogy, MFA Seminar, was chair of the MFA Board of Study and was on the admissions, and MFA concert committees. In 2012 Walker retired from Purchase College as Dean Emerita and founded the Carol K Walker Global Dance LLC.

Before coming to NY, in Chicago, Walker was a professional performer in modern dance and musical theatre and began her long and prestigious teaching career in dance. At Barat College in Illinois, she was Professor and Director of the Performing Arts Center. She taught dance technique, Anatomy for Dancers, Dance History, Pedagogy, Choreography, and choreographed and directed the Repertory Concerts. She won grants for her choreography, sponsored major performance companies from NYC on Title 3 Grants and founded a dance teacher certification program and a dance/psych, dance therapy interdisciplinary degree major.  Walker founded and directed the Carol Walker Dance Studio Ltd. from 1971 - 1984.

In October of 2013 Walker was invited to be the one and only judge from the USA to be on an international panel of judges for the Super Dancer Born Tonight Competition Dance Off between Chinese and American stars of "So You Think You Can Dance" at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas which was aired on CCTV1 in China on January 28, 2014. In November 2014, Walker was again invited to be a judge for 3 sessions of the Chinese So You Think You Can Dance held in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, China and aired on CCTV1 in January 2015.  She produced and directed performances and workshops in Beijing at the Beijing Dance Academy from 2010 to 2015.

Walker sponsored and was advisor to 9 visiting scholars from the Beijing Dance Academy on Chinese government scholarships to study at Purchase College.

She is delighted to return to Dance in Higher Ed. at Hunter College, NYC!
