Jana Feinman Director of Dance Program

Professor

Holds an EdD in Dance Education, with a specialization in Dance from Temple University (1994), and is Director of the Dance Program and Artistic Director of the Hunter Dance Company. During her tenure at Hunter College, Dr. Feinman initiated several innovative programs including an outreach program for public schools, curriculum to support New York State certification in dance education, the "Sharing the Legacy" conference and concert series and received State approval for a 3-pronged graduate degree curriculum: MFA, MA in dance education and BA/MA in dance education.

Dr. Feinman has received two recent awards from the college: In 2013 she received the honor of being the first faculty recipient of the Hunter College mentorship award and in 2007 she received the Hunter College President's award for excellence in creative activity. Over the years Dr. Feinman has received several grants for the Dance Program including an NEA grant: American Masterpieces: Dance, NEFA grant, American Masterpieces: Dance-College component as well as an ongoing grant from the Harkness Foundation for Dance.

Before coming to Hunter, Dr. Feinman founded the dance program at Trenton State College where she taught for 5 years. Other teaching credits include the Mercer County High School for the Performing Arts and Artist in the Classroom (N.J.). She is the founder of the dance program for the NJ Governor's School and taught in the program from 1983-1996.

Dr. Feinman has many years of experience as a dance educator and as a performer and choreographer. In the 1970's she performed professionally with "People" dance company and since then has choreographed over 30 contemporary and theater works. Her recent professional performances include Tharp's "The 100's" performed at Battery Park, NY, and a structured improvisation of "The Horse's Mouth" performed at St. Mark's Church. She currently serves on the New York City Center Education Programming Committee, the College Partnership Program Committee and is a member of many panels, most recently in New York Live Arts "Critical Correspondence - University Research Project."

Dr. Feinman has served as: President of the American Dance Guild, 1996 to 2000, consultant for New York City and New York State Departments of Education, Board Member for the 50th Anniversary of Limon Dance, and Chair of the national "Sharing the Legacy Conference" and the "Nikolais Legacy Forum" - professional activities that build upon her research interest in preservation of the dance heritage and strategies for documentation and retrieval of archival materials of American dance. In keeping with these interests, Professor Feinman most recently (2008) contributed a chapter on the chronology of Nikolais' work in the definitive book on Nikolais, "The Returns of Alwin Nikolais."
