HUNTER/Meiji Gakuin University Exchange

FALL/YEAR program application deadline: FEBRUARY 15th.

*Due to space constraints, we typically only nominate students for the MGU exchange in the FALL/YEAR application cycle. Please indicate in your application if you are applying for the full year or fall semester. If you are interested in this program but you are only able to study abroad in the SPRING, please contact the Office of Education Abroad.

The MGU International Student Program (ISP) provides an opportunity for English-speaking students from exchange partners to pursue undergraduate studies at the Yokohama campus, located in Kanagawa Prefecture.

The aim of this program is to provide a creative academic environment for studies pertaining to Japan and the Japanese language for international students who have studied Japanese for a minimum of one year at the university level. The International Student Program welcomes exchange students from partner universities located in Asia, Europe, North America and Oceania.

Exchange students are required to stay in the Yokohama dorm.

There are a limited number of scholarships through JASSO available for exchange students studying in Japan. Accepted students are automatically considered for this award.

For more information (including estimated costs/expenses for a semester), visit their website.

All students participating in the exchange program are required to enroll in the CUNY comprehensive travel insurance policy through Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI) in addition to the Japanese National Health Insurance. Visit this link to learn more about the CUNY policy and view monthly rates. Accepted students will receive the appropriate code to self-enroll.

You must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 at the time of your application. You must have at least 60 credits at the end of the semester in which you are applying, and you must have studied Japanese for a minimum of one year at the university level.

Please submit the following application materials by the deadline (see deadlines above):

  1. Letter of Recommendation from someone who has instructed you at the college level and is familiar with your academic background and abilities. Your recommender should submit the letter directly to the Office of Education Abroad by email to, or in hard copy to room 1447E.
  2. Online Application Form. Have the following documents prepared to upload with your online application:
    • A personal statement of 400-500 words explaining your personal and educational background. Indicate academic experiences and/or academic interests which led you to apply for this particular program.
    • Copy of your unofficial Hunter transcript, downloaded from your CUNYfirst account.

We encourage transfer students who have completed at least one full semester (minimum of 12 credits) at Hunter to apply for our exchange programs, provided they meet the other requirements. Qualified transfer students with fewer than 12 completed Hunter credits may be considered on a case-by-case basis. All students who have transferred to Hunter must also provide an official transcript from their previous institution(s) with their application (we will accept unofficial transcripts printed from CUNYfirst only). You will be able to upload multiple transcripts via the Online Application Form.
    • Scan of the photo page of your passport. We require a copy of your valid passport before you go abroad. If you are in the process of applying for or rewewing your passport, you may submit the Online Application Form without this; however, you must be prepared to email a scan of your new passport as soon as you receive it. You will forfeit your spot in the program if you cannot provide a copy of your valid passport by March 15th.

All application materials must be submitted by the deadline. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Accepted nominees will be required to submit hard copies of all documents listed in the MGU ISP Instructions (navigate to the "Application" section on MGU's ISP website) to the Office of Education Abroad by March 15th. You do not need to resubmit your letter of recommendation. If you are unable to submit all required documents by that date, you will forfeit your spot in the program.

Applicants to the exchange programs are also eligible to apply for the Chancellor’s Global Scholarship.
