I) Summary

Location: Santo Domingo, The Dominican Republic 

Dates: February 17 - February 22, 2018 

Credits OfferedThis is a non-credit bearing course that satisfies 30 professional development hours on English language learners, offered through Hunter College's School of Education, for New York State Education Department's Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE).

(CTLE tuition is included in program fee.)

Application Deadline: November 29, 2017

Program Fee: $1,550.00 (estimate) includes CTLE tuition, hotel, food, local transportation, cultural events and international health and travel insurance. AIRFARE is NOT included in the program fee (estimated $650.00). All students are responsible for arriving at their study abroad location by the first day of the program.

Payment Schedule: $350.00 application fee and deposit is due with the application. $1,200.00 (program fee balance; estimate) is due January 5, 2018.

II) Program Description

This program offers participants the opportunity to immerse themselves in critical inquiry about English language teaching in settings outside the US. Participants will delve into the opportunities and challenges in language teaching worldwide by directly experiencing teaching English as a foreign language and serving as a volunteer teacher in Dominican English language teaching programs. Participants will also have the opportunity to visit K-12 Dominican public schools. Participants will engage with Dominican English language teachers, professors who specialize in language teacher education, and public and private sector English language educators.

III) Prerequisites & Credits

Students must physically fit enough to walk on fairly flat terrain for several hours. No Spanish proficiency is required. Students must be vaccinated for hepatitis A.Students will receive a grade of Pass or Fail and credited for 30 CTLE hours through a provided certificate of completion.

Application Requirements: In addition to completing the study abroad application forms, those wishing to apply must complete the following requirements:

  • Two brief professional/educational letters of recommendation from two references who can comment on your professionalism, intercultural awareness, and ability to contribute to the group. These should clearly indicate how the recommender knows you and provide title information and contact emails. 
  • Approval from the faculty member teaching the course is required.
