Program Description
When Hawaii became a state in 1959, it was one of the most ethnically and racially diverse states in the country. This course will focus on the historical and contemporary ethnic geographies of Hawaii, particularly in relation to the sugar plantation economy, and the evolution of what is known as "local" culture - a synthesis of all the groups. We will also examine how different immigrant groups have created unique ethnic landscapes and ethnic economies throughout the Honolulu metropolitan area.
The course fulfills General Education Requirement 3B and Pluralism and Diversity Requirement B.
Pre-requisite
One 100-level social science course (GEOG, ANTHC, SOC, PSYCH, POLSC, HIST)
Interested Graduate Students can also participate. Meet with Professor Miyares in advance to discuss an independent research project related to the geography of immigration and ethnicity in Hawaii.
Credits & Grades
Students in this program will receive both credits and letter grades. Grades will count towards their Hunter GPA.
