II) Program Description

NOTE: This summer only the first track (EDESL 702 - 2 credits) will run.

The School of Education at Hunter College offers a two-track program in San Jose, Costa Rica, open to students with a BA degree or higher. The program is offered in collaboration with the Universidad Latina and the International Center for Development Studies (ICDS).

The first track (EDESL 702 - 2 credits) offers participants the opportunity to immerse themselves in critical inquiry about English language teaching in settings outside the US. Students will directly experience teaching English as a foreign language by serving as a volunteer teacher in a Costa Rican English language teaching program and also visit K-12 Costa Rican public schools.

The second track (BILED 779 - 3 credits) provides the opportunity to engage in discussions on culturally relevant teaching while considering the complexities of structural issues, pedagogy, language and power, and the role of students' identity formation. The Costa Rican location allows students to weave in theory and practice as they consider implementation of pedagogical practices in a bilingual school setting.

Both courses will begin in June on campus and online, followed by the travel to Costa Rica, where the students will continue their coursework with the instructors, who will accompany the group. They will simultaneously engage in a non-credit Spanish language learning at their proficiency level at the Universidad Latina.

Participants will live with Costa Rican families. They will also enjoy cultural excursions in Costa Rica with planned group travel to the Monteverde Cloud Forest, Manuel Antonio Pacific Beach, and local towns and volcanoes.

The program is open only to students with a completed BA degree.
