Position Description and Duties

  

 

Reporting to the Director of Environmental Health and Safety, the Health and Safety Compliance Assistant will support the Director in the development and implementation of general environmental and occupational safety programs as well as compliance with regulatory and institutional safety policies.
Responsibilities may include:
• Assist with the development and implementation of Hunter’s safety and compliance programs and procedures.

• Assist with the management of regulated waste programs. Collect and prepare hazardous, radioactive, biomedical, universal, electronic and other regulated wastes from laboratories and buildings in several Manhattan locations. Maintain waste management records and prepare reports.
• Assists faculty and staff with various safety and environmental inspections and audits to ensure compliance with government mandates and college guidelines.
• Assists the Environmental Health and Safety Officer in the development, delivery and implementation of various safety training programs for faculty, staff, and students (e.g. laboratory safety, chemical hygiene, bloodborne pathogens, RCRA training, radiation safety, Right to Know, respirator protection, etc.) May conduct training.
• Advises employees on selection, use, maintenance of lab safety and personal protective equipment.

• Conducts routine testing and calibration of safety related equipment.
• Identifies safety hazards and recommends actions to correct them.
• Assists the EHS Officer in the preparation of compliance reports safety incidents, etc.

• Assist with collection and analysis of samples.
• Respond to occupational and environmental safety issues.
• Respond to spills for biomedical, chemical and infectious wastes.
• Perform administration/office related tasks.
• Respond to weekend and after-hour emergencies.
• Other related duties as assigned.

     

                  

Qualification Requirements

  

 

A bachelor's degree in the sciences (chemistry, biology, etc.), engineering or related discipline with at least one year of experience working with waste management and safety programs.

DOT certification in management of hazardous chemicals. HAZWOPER certification. Experience working with regulated wastes including: chemical, biomedical, radioactive. Good communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to travel to several locations in Manhattan.
