FDNY Certificate of Fitness

The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) issues and requires Certificate of Fitness for different types of hazardous or dangerous situations. They provide examinations and guidance to applicants to ensure safe work practices are being followed and carried out. Certificate of Fitness holders are responsible for keeping up to date with regulatory mandates and may be required to retake any examinations deemed necessary by the Fire Department.

C-14 Supervision of Non-Production Chemical Laboratory:

According to the FDNY, at least one Certificate of Fitness holder shall be present in the laboratory unit while work is being conducted. This individual is responsilbe for making sure all fire safety regulations are being followed inside the laboratory.

For initial applicants with a Bachelor's degree plus two years of laboratory experience or Master's level education or higher in the Sciences, Environmental, or Engineering can submit the following:

Read the following FDNY resources before proceeding with the application process:

  • C-14 application
  • C-14 affirmation
  • 2x2 photo
  • Copy of Hunter ID
  • Copy of most recent diploma
  • Letter from PI confirming work experience (required for Bachelor's level education ONLY)

Submit all documentation and renewal inquiries to ehs@hunter.cuny.edu or call (212) 772-4462. C-14 certificates need to be renewed every three years. 

 

C-30 Supervision of Flammable and Combustible Finishing Operations:

According to the FDNY, at least one Certificate of Fitness holder shall be present at all times while chemicals and materials used in spray-finishing/dipping operations or floor finishing operations are taking place. This individual is responsible for making sure all fire safety regulations are being followed on the premise. 

Bring the following documents between 8AM-2:30PM Monday through Friday to the New York City Fire Department (FDNY),  Public Certification Unit, 9 MetroTech Center, 1st Floor, Brooklyn, NY 11201:

  • Letter of employment from department
  • Copy of most recent diploma
  • Fee waiver letter from EHS
  • Two forms of identification, at least one must be government-issued

 Submit copy of issued Certificate of Fitness to ehs@hunter.cuny.edu C-30 certificates need to be renewed every three years.


A courtesy renewal notice from the FDNY will be sent to the home address provided on the application 90 days before expiration with instructions on how to renew online. As long as you are an employee of Hunter College, the Office of Environmental Health and Safety serves as a Designated Cooridnator to process these renewals on your behalf.
