FDNY Certificate of Fitness

The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) issues and requires Certificate of Fitness for different types of hazardous or dangerous situations. They provide examinations and guidance to applicants to ensure safe work practices are being followed and carried out. Certificate of Fitness holders are responsible for keeping up to date with regulatory mandates and may be required to retake any examinations deemed necessary by the Fire Department.

The following Certificates of Fitness are the most common required by the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) at Hunter College:

C-14 Supervision of Non-Production Chemical Laboratory

According to the FDNY, at least one Certificate of Fitness holder shall be present in the laboratory unit while work is being conducted. This individual is responsilbe for making sure all fire safety regulations are being followed inside the laboratory.
Resources Initial Applicants and Renewals

Read the following FDNY resources before proceeding with the application process:

 

 

 

For initial applicants with a Bachelor's degree plus two years of laboratory experience or Master's level education or higher in the Sciences, Environmental, or Engineering can submit the following:

  • C-14 application
  • C-14 affirmation
  • 2x2 photo
  • Copy of Hunter ID
  • Copy of most recent diploma
  • Letter from PI confirming work experience (required for Bachelor's level education ONLY)

Submit all documentation and renewal inquiries to Christina Van Pala at cv594@hunter.cuny.edu or at (212) 396-6918. Renewal Forms should be filled out and returned to EHS within 90 days of expiration. C-14 certificates need to be renewed every three years. 


C-30 Supervision of Flammable and Combustible Finishing Operations

According to the FDNY, at least one Certificate of Fitness holder shall be present at all times while chemicals and materials used in spray-finishing/dipping operations or floor finishing operations are taking place. This individual is responsible for making sure all fire safety regulations are being followed on the premise. 
Resources Initial Applicants and Renewals

Read the following FDNY resources before proceeding with the application process:

 

 

 

 

 

Bring the following documents between 8AM-2:30PM Monday through Friday to the New York City Fire Department (FDNY),  Public Certification Unit, 9 MetroTech Center, 1st Floor, Brooklyn, NY 11201: 

  • C-30 application
  • Letter of employment from department
  • Copy of most recent diploma
  • Fee waiver letter from EHS
  • Two forms of identification, at least one must be government-issued

Submit copy of issued Certificate of Fitness to Christina Van Pala at cv594@hunter.cuny.edu. A courtesy renewal notice from the FDNY will be sent to the home address provided on the application 90 days before expiraiton with instructions on how to renew online. C-30 certificates need to be renewed every three years.
