About CE Programs
Continuing Education Programs at Hunter College is represented by its five branches: The International English Language Institute (IELI); Continuing Education; The Writing Center; Parliamo Italiano; and the English Language Teaching Institute (ELTI). The Continuing Education Programs department was created to fill educational or professional needs that are not filled by other post-graduate degree programs. No other school, college or university within our reach offers the amplitude of courses to satisfy all needs and interests that we offer at Hunter College Continuing Education Programs.
About Our Programs:
Hunter College was founded in 1870 by Irish immigrant and social reformer Thomas Hunter as a teacher-training school for women. Hunter College has long enjoyed a distinguished reputation for liberal arts and sciences and professional schools. Completely co-educational since 1964, Hunter is one of the largest colleges in the City University of New York (CUNY). Hunter College is a comprehensive teaching, research and service institution, long committed to excellence and access of undergraduate and graduate students in the liberal arts and sciences, as well as in several professional fields: education, health sciences, nursing and social work. In addition, Hunter’s Continuing Education department offers a wide array of non-credit courses and consists of five programs: Continuing Education (catalog program), the International English Language Institute, The Writing Center, Parliamo Italiano, and the English Language Teaching Institute.
The International English Language Institute at Hunter College (IELI) has existed as a full-service provider of English as a Second Language (ESL) courses since 1976, although English for the Foreign Born classes go back to the beginning of the 20th century. IELI serves over 3,500 students per year, in courses ranging from beginner to Bridge-to-College and advanced courses for the business and professional communities. Our student population ranges from newly arrived immigrants to post-doctoral students affiliated with major research institutions. The IELI is part of the Continuing Education at Hunter College department.
Continuing Education at Hunter College has existed, in its present form, since 1997. It serves as the non-credit educational arm of Hunter College, of the City University of New York. The Continuing Education at Hunter College catalog program offers a breadth of courses and programs covering topics ranging from Microsoft Office to nursing to foreign languages. We offer a variety of Certificate Programs- such as Interpretation/Translation, Legal Studies, and Graphic Design, in addition to our many academic courses designed to help students to better their knowledge of everything from computer literacy to financial know-how. Whether students are new to the workforce, looking for a career change or simply want to learn a new skill, our continuing education programs are designed for professional development and personal enrichment.
The Writing Center-CE at Hunter College has offered an exciting cultural showcase of writing workshops, special topic courses, and literary events since joining the CUNY Hunter community in September 2010. With specified classes for each literary genre, students at The Writing Center are educated on the literary field of their choice by successfully published authors from that same genre. In addition to the knowledge gained in classes, The Writing Center pushes to educate students outside of the typical classroom environment by offering free literary events throughout the semester where students have the unique opportunity to listen to their favorite authors speak and partake in a question and answer with the audience.
Parliamo Italiano officially became part of Hunter College when the board of Parliamo Italiano gifted its assets to Hunter College in June 2011. For more than 30 years, Parliamo Italiano has offered Italian language courses using a successfully proven method developed by the founding director, Franca Lally. Parliamo Italiano offers courses for all levels- days, evenings, and Saturdays. Parliamo Italiano is the perfect complement to the offerings of Continuing Education at Hunter College.
The ELT Institute at Hunter College offers high quality and practical teacher training for Speakers of Other Languages. Classes in the TESOL Certificate Program provide instruction in effective methods and techniques for teaching language. Participants study state-of-the-science content using authentic material and then observe teacher/student classroom interaction. They apply what they have learned in real world teaching contexts at the Hunter College IELI. The ELT Institute also develops customized programs to meet the demands of teacher training programs across the globe.
