This practical seminar explores methods that encourage meaningful communication while not neglecting accuracy. Learn ways to use teaching aids skillfully, make your classes interesting and fun, and encourage student participation.
ELT02 Tips and Tools for Teaching Grammar for the Four Skills
Grammar is a tool for communication, not an end in itself. This seminar is for teachers who wish to learn a variety of creative and motivating ways to teach grammar to students at all levels. It's also the place to get answers to questions your students ask.
ELT03 Technology for Language Teachers
This seminar looks at easy ways to use and produce materials for teaching listening and speaking skills. Areas to be explored include Youtube, digital stories, podcasts, blogs, electronic portfolios and classroom management tools such as Blackboard.
ELT04 Creating ELT Materials & Games
This seminar stresses fast and easy ways to create customized materials that make students participate actively in class. To increase student interest, and meet individual needs, supplement your course book with activities and exercises from pictures, newspaper articles and advertisements, film and TV clips, folktales, material from ELT sites on the internet, YouTube, and more. Materials will focus on listening, speaking, reading and writing skills for students of varying ages and language proficiency. Computer lab time is included.
ELT05 Teaching Listening & Speaking Skills
This seminar looks at the latest research findings in teaching listening, and the kind of activities that motivate students, improve listening comprehension, and lessen their fear of speaking. Activities emphasize using authentic input, creatively expanding textbook tasks, and techniques for using media and internet sites effectively.
ELT06 Teaching with Video & Film
This seminar explores techniques for effective use of film and video in the classroom with beginners through advanced students. Teachers will learn to create activities to improve listening, speaking, pronunciation, grammar and writing.
ELT07 Creative Ideas for Teaching Writing
Teachers and students can have fun with writing! The seminar will use stories, poetry and drama activities to get students from beginning through advanced levels talking and writing.
ELT08 Teachers Becoming Trainers
This seminar is for experienced teachers who want to move into mentoring and training novice teachers or offering in-service workshops. Topics will include needs analysis, useful training activities, and workshop planning.
ELT09 CLIL (Content & Language Integrated Learning)
CLIL introduces students to content areas (science, music, art, etc.) through the medium of a second language. This seminar will explore CLIL basic principles, look at lesson frameworks, and explore materials and tasks that build listening, reading, speaking and writing skills through authentic content such as news and documentary clips and textvook excerpts. Both classroom content teachers and English language teachers are welcome!
ELT10 Integrated Skills through Literature
Intermediate and advanced learners are ready for authentic materials. This seminar will stress methods and activities to use literature (novels, poetry, drama, movie versions of novels or stories) for both children and adults in ways that activate multiple intelligences.
ELT11 An Intercultural Toolbox for Teachers & Trainers
Today's global economy demands sensitivity to other cultures values and customs. This practical and enjoyable seminar will introduce teachers and trainers to basic intercultural theory through participation in a multitude of activities which create a broader awareness of unconscious beliefs.
ELT12 Assessing your Students
This seminar offers a practical look at types of teacher-made classroom and professional tests, question design and alternative assessment vehicles.
ELT13 Teaching Young Learners and Teens
Children and younger teens are often subjected to using inappropriate texts and materials meant for adults. This seminar will stress simple, but creative activities and methods that put children's needs first.
ELT14 Theater Games for Teaching Language
This seminar will show you how to use theater games and improvisational techniques to increase your students' comfort level and fluency in speaking English. Ways to teach pronunciation, intonation and vocabulary will be included.
ELT15 Issues in Program Administration
This seminar will look at topics such as budgeting, personnel (faculty and staff), testing and placement, student services, recruitment, and marketing and strategic planning.
