Minor Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is a minor?
A minor consists of 12 credits (4 courses) in a subject related
to yet different from your major. You're free to choose the subject
of your minor, within reason. If you're not sure which subject to
minor in, discuss the possibilities with an English Department advisor.
2. Who needs a minor?
All BA students at Hunter, therefore all English and English Language
Arts (ELA) majors, are required to declare a minor. However, if
a student has a double major, the minor requirement is usually waived.
3. How do I declare my minor?
You meet with an English Department advisor to complete a Major/Minor
declaration form.
4. When do I declare my minor?
You declare your minor at the same time that you declare your major.
5. I'm confused: which department oversees the minor?
The major department oversees the minor. So, if you are an English
major with a Psychology minor, you see an English Department advisor
to find out which courses qualify for your Psychology minor. But
if you are a Psychology major with an English minor, you see a Psychology
Department advisor to find out which courses you need for a minor
in English. The only exception to this is in the case of Elementary
Education, which requires the approval of the School of Education.
6. What are the rules for a minor for English majors?
The minor is 12 credits, but not just any 12 credits. Students must
have at least one course at the 300 level, and no more than 2 courses
at the 100 level. (The one exception to this is the minor in Psychology
because non-Psychology majors are not permitted to take 300-level
courses.) In all cases, at least half of the minor credits (6 credits)
must have been completed at Hunter College. Within this framework,
you can choose the courses that will constitute your minor, in consultation
with an English Department advisor.
7. What are the rules for a minor for an ELA major?
The minor for ELA students is 12 credits, at any level. All other
English Department guidelines apply. Note that ELA majors may not
minor in English or Education. If you want to use the QUEST allied
major instead of the minor, you must be admitted to that program
through the School of Education. You may minor in any of the other
departments that contribute to the ELA major, such as Film and Media,
Theater, or Anthropology.
8. May I use the courses that fulfill my minor requirements
to satisfy any General Education Requirements (GER) or Pluralism
and Diversity Requirements (P&D)?
Minor courses may be used to fulfill any GER requirement with the
exception of the Foreign Language requirement (see pages 32-33 of
the Hunter College Undergraduate Catalogue 2002-2004 for information
about this).
Courses used to fulfill P&D requirements may also be used for
any other requirement: GER, major, or minor. You could, for example,
apply a particular course to the minor requirement, and Stage 3
of the GER, and a P&D requirement.
