Departmental Honors Program

The Departmental Honors program is designed for students who are interested in a more intensive and rigorous course of study. To earn Departmental Honors, students must fulfill the following requirements:

  1. A minimum GPA of 3.5 in the major at the completion of studies and an overall GPA of at least 2.8.
  2. Successful completion of an Honors Seminar (English 494) and an Honors essay, which is usually written under the supervision of the professor teaching the seminar. Admission to all Honors Seminars is by permission of the instructor. In order to be eligible for the Honors Seminar, a student must first complete at least 24 credits in the major with a GPA of at least 3.5 in 300- and 400-level English courses and a cumulative GPA of at least 2.8. Of these credits, 21 (or in exceptional cases, 18) must be taken at Hunter. The Honors Seminar is an optional addition to the specified required courses in the student's concentration, but counts towards the required 39 credits. To receive permission, students must provide the professor with the latest calculation of their GPA in all upper-level English classes and a copy of their transcript. ALL 300- and 400-level major courses are to be counted in the GPA calculation.

Students interested in pursuing Departmental Honors should speak to an advisor no later than the beginning of senior year.
