Hunter College Campus Schools -- Boiler, Chiller and Fire Alarm Project

DATES:  Monday - Friday, 7:00am - 5:00pm, through June 2020.

SCOPE:  Boilers and related equipment located in the basement are being replaced.  Additional work related to this replacement will occur in phases:  the fuel system for the boiler will be converted from oil to natural gas; air conditioning equipment located on the rooftop will be removed and replaced; the fire alarm system will be upgraded throughout the building.

IMPACT:  A small portion of the courtyard will be inaccessible in an area where a construction trailer will be located. A portion of the north sidewalk on 94th Street between Park and Madison Avenues will be closed to pedestrian traffic beginning June 19, 2019 and will remain closed for approximately 6 months. Safety barriers and signage will be in place to divert pedestrians away from the work area. No parking will be allowed near the work area. Sidewalk excavation is expected.

Please contact Jonathan Dickson at 347.219.8989 with any concerns or questions.

Please see Frequently Asked Questions below for more details regarding this construction project.

Noisy work is expected to begin around 8am.
  • In observance of the holidays, no work is scheduled for December 25, 2019 and January 1, 2020
  • What will be the dates and hours of construction?

    Monday - Friday, 7:00am - 5:00pm, through June 2020.

What areas of the building will be closed during construction?

All areas of the building normally accessible to students, faculty, and staff will continue to be open during this project.

    What work is being done?

Boilers and related equipment located in the basement are being replaced.  Additional work related to this replacement will occur in phases:  the fuel system for the boiler will be converted from oil to natural gas; air conditioning equipment located on the rooftop will be removed and replaced; the fire alarm system will be upgraded throughout the building.

How is construction-related noise going to be addressed?

We can expect that during the work hours of 7:00am and 5:00pm there will be intermittent noisy work.  The Hunter College Campus Schools staff is working closely with the construction team to minimize the impacts to our students, staff, and neighbors; and to not schedule activities directly above the work zone.  However, the community should be prepared for some level of noise during the work hours.

Who will be doing the construction?

This project is being managed by Genesys Engineering under the oversight of the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY).  The project has gone through a public procurement process and the selected contractor C.D.E. Air Conditioning Co., Inc.

What expectations will be set for the behavior of construction staff on campus?

There will typically be 3-5 construction employees on site daily who will be required to enter at the main entrance to the school and register with Public Safety.  All construction employees will be required to wear badges to enter the premises.  The contractor employs no registered sex offenders.  Construction employees are on site to perform work and should not interact with anyone in the building other than designated Hunter College Campus Schools personnel.  Should any student or faculty have any questions or concerns, they should be directed to the nearest Public Safety Officer.

What environmental health and safety precautions are being taken?

Measures are being taken to ensure that, should hazardous materials be encountered during construction, notification, testing, and remediation are performed in accordance with all local, state, and federal laws. Temporary protection will prevent dust and debris from leaving the site, and regular construction housekeeping will be performed.
