Check out the 2007-2008 application Check list
The first step to applying for financial aid at Hunter College is to fill out the Free Application for Federal
Student Aid known as the FAFSA. Completing your FAFSA on the web can speed up the application process. You can apply online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov. or pick up an application at
the OASIS in 217 Hunter North. Student eligibility for federal aid includes a requirement to register for Selective Service. To register now, click here.
Students who access the FAFSA on the Web will
need to complete the signature requirement by printing out and mailing the signature page or by using your 4-digit PIN (your parents will need to
have their own PIN). There is a third option which is slow and not recommended. The third option involves waiting to receive your Student Aid Report (SAR), providing the
required signatures and then returning it to the federal processor through the U.S. Postal Service.
All students and parents are now able to request a PIN from the Department of
Education. The PIN can be used as an electronic signature and can speed up your processing time. To request a PIN, visit http://pin.ed.gov and click on “Apply fo PIN” at
the bottom of the page.
Once you file your FAFSA, you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) by mail or
email within four weeks. If you do not receive your SAR within four weeks, you can contact the Federal Student Aid Center at 1.800.4.FED.AID.

WHAT'S NEXT?
So you have filed your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and received
your Student Aid Report (SAR), now what?
The first thing you should do is to check your Student Aid Report to make sure that
Hunter College is listed as one of the schools to receive your FAFSA information. Check questions 86-97 to make sure that our federal school code (002689) is listed. If we are
not listed, you will need to call the federal processor at 1(800)433-3243 and add our school code so that we can receive your application information.
Hunter College will receive your financial aid information from the federal processor and
if any additional documents are needed to complete your file a Problem Notice will be sent to you by the Office of Financial Aid. Respond to CUNY Financial
Aid Edit Notice
and bring in the requested documents in person whenever possible.
The Office of Financial Aid will mail the Financial Aid Award Letter. Your financial aid
will be reflected on your billing statement and checks will be sent to your home address.
If you wish to apply for a Direct Loan please review the steps outlined on this website. Filing your FAFSA is the first step in applying for a Direct Loan.
WHAT IF I HAVE SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES?
During the academic year, you and your family may experience a change in your
financial situation. You may feel your situation is unusual or warrants additional consideration. You may think an error was made in the calculation of your financial need.
It is possible for you to ask a financial aid counselor to review your financial aid application and make adjustments that more closely reflect your individual circumstances.
It is your responsibility to notify the Office of Financial Aid of any special or unusual
circumstances or changes in your financial status that may affect your ability to pay for College.
Your first step in requesting special consideration is to obtain the appropriate form either
through the printable forms on this website or in person at the OASIS. Then, complete
the form carefully, include all required supplemental documentation, obtain the required
signatures and bring the forms to the Financial Aid Office. The Financial Aid Office will
make a final determination on your request. Filing a request does not mean that your request will be approved.
WHAT ABOUT TAP?
The Office of Financial Aid receives your FAFSA information electronically from the
federal processor. New students will receive a CUNY TAP/APTS application in the mail and need to complete, sign and send in the application. Some continuing students may
receive a CUNY TAP/APTS letter in place of the full application. Continuing students should complete the APTS questions and mail in the letter.
The University Application Processing Center (UAPC) will calculate an estimate of your
TAP award which will be included on your Financial Aid Award Letter. The New York State Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC) will send a TAP Award Certificate
when your award is finalized.
