Step 4:  Complete the Direct Loan Request Form

In addition to filing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), students who want to borrow funds through from the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program must complete the Direct Loan Request form available at the Hunter College’s Financial Aid website under printable forms, at the Oasis Office, RM 217N or at the Office of Financial Aid.

For explanation how the different types of Direct Loans, students should refer to the Direct Loan information link on the Office of Financial website.  The U.S. Department of Education’s websites are another resource that students can view information about the Direct Loan programs.

The Office of Financial Aid at Hunter College originates loans for applicants after the student has registered for classes, since the number of credits for which the student enrolls is one of the factors in determining the amount of the approved loan. The loan record is then sent by CUNY to the Department of Education for approval to disburse the loan funds and to the Direct Loan Servicer, which checks the promissory note status.
Disbursement of Federal Direct Loan funds at Hunter College can be made either by Direct Deposit of the funds into the student’s bank account or by a check which is mailed to the student by the college’s Bursar’s Office.  (Direct Deposit is not available to parents who borrow Federal Direct PLUS Loan funds.)  We encourage students to enroll for Direct Deposit since it is the fastest way of delivering financial aid funds to students.  The Direct Deposit enrollment form is available in the Printable Forms section of our web site.
If the student has any outstanding charges owed to the college for the current year, the Bursar’s Office will deduct the amount of those charges from the loan funds before the disbursement is made.
