QUESTIONS ASKED AFTER YOU FILE

WHY  DO I HAVE TO BRING IN MY PARENTS' TAX FORMS?

Some applications  are selected by the U.S. Department of Education for a review process  called "Verification". The Office of Financial Aid must compare information  from your application with information you provide on this worksheet,  signed copies of your federal Income Tax Returns and other financial documents.  If you are married, you will need to submit your spouse's tax return.  If you are considered dependent for Federal aid purposes, you will need  to submit signed copies of your parents’ tax returns. If there are differences  between your application information and the documents you submit, your  application may need to be reprocessed. The Office of Financial Aid can  not make any Federal financial aid payments available to you until all  verification requirements have been met and the necessary corrections  have been made.

WHEN WILL I ACTUALLY  RECEIVE MY CHECK?

Financial aid checks  are mailed by the Bursar throughout the year. A schedule which details  the distribution dates is available outside of the OASIS. Remember that  your financial aid cannot be released unless you have met all the requirements  for disbursement.

HOW CAN I PAY  FOR MY BOOKS?

Many students who  enroll at Hunter College will be able to  use a portion of their Pell Grant awards to purchase books and supplies  at the beginning of the Fall & Spring semesters at the Barnes & Noble Campus Bookstore  at Hunter College. This is possible through the Book Voucher process.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE  TO PURCHASE BOOKS THROUGH THE BOOK VOUCHER PROCESS?

The general eligibility  requirements for a book voucher are:

  • Be eligible for  a Federal Pell Grant award, with all required documentation submitted  to the Office of Financial Aid.
  • Register for at  least 6 credits or equated credits.
  • Have a credit  balance from a Federal Pell Grant award between $25 and $300.

HOW IS THE AMOUNT  OF THE BOOK VOUCHER DETERMINED?

The amount of the  voucher ranges from $25 to $375, depending on the student's credit  balance after tuition and fees are paid to the college. The credit balance  is calculated by adding the tuition and fees and then subtracting the  amounts of the TAP award and the Federal Pell Grant award. Although the  amount of the voucher varies between $25 and $346, it may not exceed the  amount of the Federal Pell Grant for the spring semester. The amount of  purchases made through the book voucher process at Barnes & Noble  will be deducted from each student's Federal Pell Grant award.

HOW WILL I KNOW  HOW MUCH I CAN SPEND THROUGH THE BOOK VOUCHER PROCESS?

Students for whom  the college calculates an eligible credit balance that includes a Federal  Pell Grant award will receive a mailer from Hunter College informing  them how much they may spend at Barnes & Noble through the voucher  process. These letters will be mailed 10 days prior to the start of the semester.  Students may also inquire at the OASIS to find out the amount they may spend at Barnes & Noble through the voucher process.

WHEN CAN I START  TO MAKE PURCHASES THROUGH THE BOOK VOUCHER PROCESS?

Purchases may be  made between the first day of classes through the fourth week of the semester. Purchases may not be made through the voucher  process until the college's records calculate an eligible credit  balance which includes a Federal Pell Grant award, and the college provides  that information to Barnes & Noble.

IF MY FINANCIAL  AID AWARDS WEREN'T IN PLACE BEFORE THE SPRING SEMESTER BEGAN, CAN  I STILL TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE BOOK VOUCHER?

Starting on  the first day of class, Barnes & Noble will receive frequently updated  credit balance for the first two weeks of class from Hunter College's  Computer Center. Barnes & Noble will generally have book voucher information  the day after the credit balance is calculated, so that students whose  financial aid awards are applied towards their bills after the first day  of class will generally have to wait just one day after the aid  is applied before purchases can be made at Barnes & Noble through  the book voucher process.

WHAT KIND OF PURCHASES  CAN BE MADE THROUGH THE BOOK VOUCHER PROCESS?

The voucher may be  used to purchase textbooks, notebooks, pens and other supplies. The voucher  may not be used to purchase articles of clothing, glassware, giftware  and other non-classroom supply items.

DO I HAVE TO MAKE  ALL MY PURCHASES THROUGH THE BOOK VOUCHER PROCESS AT ONE TIME?

The voucher does  not have to be used all at once. Purchases can be made at several different  times while the voucher is valid.

DO I HAVE TO SPEND  THE ENTIRE AMOUNT OF THE BOOK VOUCHER?

The entire amount  of the voucher does not have to be spent at Barnes & Noble. Whatever  is not spent will be issued as part of a student's Federal Pell Grant.

CAN I USE THE  BOOK VOUCHER AT ANY OTHER BOOKSTORE BESIDES BARNES & NOBLE AT HUNTER  COLLEGE?

No. The Book Voucher  can only be used at the Barnes & Noble Campus Bookstore at Hunter  College. It cannot be used at any other bookstores in the neighborhood.  It cannot be used at the main branch of Barnes & Noble on 16 Street.
