The  Aid for Part-Time Study (APTS) program provides grants assistance for  eligible part-time students enrolled in approved undergraduate studies.

INCOME  LIMITS

Eligibility for an APTS award is based on New York State net taxable income  from the preceding calendar year.

  • If  students were eligible to be claimed as dependents by their parents,  family New York State NET taxable income can be as much as $50,550 to  qualify for an award. Family income includes student's AND parents' income.

  • If  students were not eligible to be claimed by their parents as tax dependents,  their New York State NET taxable income (including spouse's income)  can be as much as $34,250 to qualify for an award. Spouse's income must  be included if they were married on or before December 31 of the previous  calendar year.

  • If  students were not eligible to be claimed by their parents but were eligible  to claim tax dependents other than self and/or spouse, New York State  NET taxable income (including spouse's income) can be as much as $50,550  to qualify for an award. Spouse's income must be included if they were  married on or before December 31 of the previous calendar year.


AWARD  AMOUNTS

APTS awards at CUNY are made in the following amounts:

  • If  students were eligible to be claimed as tax dependents by their parents  and family New York State Net Taxable Income is up to $25,000, the APTS  award amount is $45 for each equated credit of tuition that is charged.
  •  If  students were eligible to be claimed as tax dependents by their parents  and family New York State Net Taxable Income is $25,001 to $50,550,  the APTS award amount is $20 for each equated credit of tuition that  is charged.
  • If  students were not eligible to be claimed by their parents as tax dependents  and their New York State Net Taxable Income (including spouse's income)  is up to $10,000, the APTS award is $45 for each equated credit of tution  that is charged.
  • If  students were not eligible to be claimed by their parents as tax dependents  and their New York State Net Taxable Income (including spouse's income)  is $10,000 to $34,250, the APTS award is $20 for each equated credit  of tuition that is charged.
  • If  students were not eligible to be claimd by their parents but were eligible  to claim tax dependents other than self and/or spouse and New York State  Net Taxable Income is up to $25,000, the APTS award amount is $45 for  each equated credit of tuition that is charged.
  • If  students were not eligible to be claimed by their parents but were eligible  to claim tax dependents other than self and/or spouse and New York State  Net Taxable Income is $25,001 to $50,550, the APTS award amount is $20  for each equated credit of tuition that is charged.


STUDY  REQUIREMENTS

For this program, part-time study means being enrolled at cuny for at least (6) but less than 12 semester hours per semester.

AWARD  ELIGIBLITY

To be considered for an APTS award, students must:

  • Enroll  part-time as matriculated students in approved undergraduate degree  programs or registered certificate programs at degree-granting institutions  in New York State.
  • Meet  the program income limits.
  •  Be  New York State residents and either United States citizens or qualifying  noncitizens.
  •  Have  a tuition charge of at least $100 per year.
  •  Not  have used up TAP eligibility and have a TAP segment on file.
  •  Maintain  good academic standing.
  •  Not  be in default on a Federal Family Education Loan.
  • Have  achieved at least a cumulative "C" average after having received the  equivalent of 2 full years of payment of State-sponsored student financial  aid.


SELECTION  FOR FOR AN APTS AWARD

The  New York State Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC) distributes  APTS funds to participating colleges in New York State. College financial  aid Administrators will select recipients from eligible students. Colleges  decide who to award APTS funds based on the funds they have available  and students' needs. There are no APTS awards for summer study.

HOW  DO I APPLY?

Submit  a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Be sure you have included a CUNY College in Section  six. CUNY's university application processing center (UAPC) will mail you  a Pre-printed CUNY TAP/APTS application, based on your FAFSA.  Complete  The CUNY TAP/APTS application and obtain all appropriate signatures. Follow  the instructions provided with the application. Mail it to UAPC in the  return envelope provided with the application.

WHAT  DETERMINES THE AMOUNT OF THE AWARD?

  • Academic  year in which first payment of TAP or any State award is received.
  • Type  of postsecondary institution and the tuition charged.
  • Combined  family New York net Taxable Income.
  • Financial  status (dependent or independent).

  • Other family members enrolled in college.
