Research Interests:

For the past thirteen years I have studied multiracial couples/families, and the attitudes and responses of black and white families and communities to interracial relationships. An integral part of the research is an exploration of the images and meanings attached to interracial sexuality in media and popular culture. I have published two books, Navigating Interracial Borders (Rutgers 2005) and Fade to Black and White: Interracial Images in Popular Culture (Rowman & Littlefield 2009), as well as many academic journal articles and book chapters on these issues. Currently I am conducting a global study of "mixed" marriages, having collected data in Brazil, South Africa (summer 2009) and with plans for other locations over the next three years.

My other projects include an ethnography in the New York City public schools from 2007-2011, looking at how race, class, and gender play out in the experiences and treatment of elementary school children. Beyond this, I am also working on a number of other qualitative research projects including an ethnography of racial and ethnic divisions in neighboring communities in Rhode Island.
