Tutorials
The tutorials are designed as slides with voice-over narration.
The narration will start automatically with each slide. You may
stop the narration by clicking on "stop narration". You may play
it again by clicking on "play narration". Dr Valian's voice will
say "next slide" when it is time for you to advance by clicking "next
slide".
Those using slower dialup connections may wish to bypass
the narration altogether. Transcripts for each tutorial can be
downloaded below; to bypass the narration, simply click on the link
called "bypass narration". You can print out a transcript of
the narration and read it as you look at each slide.
An outline frame at the left of the screen lists all
the slides. At any time, you can go to the outline and click on
whatever slide interests you.
You can view a tutorial by yourself or with a group of
other people. Some students have told us they have viewed the
tutorials in a group, and have stopped after many slides to discuss
the material.
Before and after tutorial 1, a questionnaire will pop
up. We value your opinions and are interested in knowing what
you already think about gender issues. The questionnaire allows
you to tell us. But it is up to you; you can answer as few or
as many questions as you like, and you can submit a blank questionnaire.
Your activity on the questionnaires is completely voluntary. When
you click on the area that says "submit questionnaire and start tutorial",
the tutorial will begin. If you wish, you can send us queries
or comments; we welcome them (see "contact us").
Technical matters: you will probably have everything
you need in order to listen to the narration. If you do not currently
have Adobe Acrobat Reader, you can download it for free by clicking
here. If you do not currently have Flash Player, you can download it
for free by clicking
here. We realize that some equipment will interact in unexpected
ways with our tutorials, so please tell us
about your technical problems. We hope, however, that the technical
imperfections you encounter will not prevent you from addressing issues
like the content, organization, and presentation of the material.
