Hunter College School of Education — Adolescent Special Education

Adolescent Special Education

This master’s degree program will prepare you to work as a certified teacher with diverse learners in middle schools and high schools. Rather than focusing on a specific subject area, Adolescent Special Educators are generalists and focus on supporting students by adapting curriculum to meet their needs. This 48-credit program leads to NYS certification in Adolescent Special Education and is offered in two formats:

1- A part time or full time on-site format.

2- A 20-month, all-online cohort format beginning Summer 2018.

As leaders in teacher preparation, the Hunter College Department of Special Education is comprised of student-focused problem-solvers with diverse, authentic school-based experiences. We aspire to reflect diversity and effectively educate students from diverse backgrounds. Our goal is to develop special educators who act as change agents that advocate for ability, culturally, linguistically, and racially diverse children, youth, adults families, and fellow educators.

Hunter’s graduate programs in special education prepare teachers to provide specially designed instruction for students with disabilities and to work across a variety of educational settings, including: special schools, special classes, resource rooms, supported general education classrooms in public and private schools, hospitals, clinics, health agencies, home programs, and residential facilities.

Core courses develop knowledge and skills across a variety of disabilities to be applied across a range of education settings. Both core and specialization courses provide historical, theoretical, and clinical perspectives, as well as current research and direct experiences with students of different ages and profiles. A hallmark of Hunter’s programs is their linking of theory to effective instruction.
