TOEFL/IELTS Scores

Prospective students whose native language is not English and who have completed all or part of their  post-secondary education in a country where English is not the native language must possess the ability to read English with ease, understand rapid idiomatic English as used in lectures and group discussions, and express thoughts quickly and efficiently in spoken, as well as written, English.

Admission is offered only to those students who are fully prepared in English as demonstrated in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS). *The Duolingo Test is not acceptable for graduate studies.

Applications for students who are required to submit Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) will not be considered without the test scores.

The following minimum scores must be obtained:

    • TOEFL iBT: 80/ Paper Based Test: 550/ Computer Administered Test: 233 (For information on taking the TOEFL, visit www.TOEFL.org)
    • IELTS: 6.5 Overall Band Score (For information on taking the IELTS, visit www.ielts.org)

*Please refer to the Program Requirements section to verify if the graduate degree program you wish to apply to requires TOEFL/IELTS scores that are higher than the College's minimum requirement.

For graduate studies, the TOEFL/IELTS requirement is determined by your academic background and is not affected by your US legal status. US Citizenship or US Permanent Residency do not exempt you from the TOEFL/IELTS requirement.

Having earned a graduate degree (master's) at an accredited institution within the United States does not exempt you from the TOEFL/IELTS requirement either.

*Applicants to the School of Education who are required to take the TOEFL/IELTS also need to present scores on the Test of Spoken English and Test of Written English. Please refer to Program Requirements to verify the minimum Spoken and Written scores required for the program to which you are applying. Effective June 1, 2021 (Spring 2022 application processing period) and thereafter, applicants with foreign credentials who also hold a prior master's or doctoral degree from a college or university accredited by a regional accrediting association in the United States, or the international equivalent degree from a university of recognized standing in a country in which all instruction is provided in English are exempt from this requirement.
