Who is require to take/submit TOEFL scores?

Prospective students whose native language is not English and who have completed all or part of their post-secondary education in a country where English is not the native language must possess the ability to read English with ease, understand rapid idiomatic English as used in lectures and group discussions and express thoughts quickly and efficiently in spoken as well as written English. Admission is offered only to those students who are fully prepared in English as demonstrated in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The TOEFL requirement is determined by your academic background and is not affected by your US legal status (US citizenship or US permanent residency do not exempt you from the TOEFL requirement).

If I earned a Master's degree in the US or from another English speaking country, but received my undergraduate degree in an international school, am I still required to submit the TOEFL?

In this situation, if your native language is not English, you must take the TOEFL.

Is there a minimum TOEFL score requirement?

Applicants to the School of Arts and Sciences, Communication Sciences, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Doctor of Physical Therapy, the School of Nursing, and the Silberman School of Social Work must present minimum TOEFL scores of:

  • 550 on the paper-administered test, or
  • 213 on the computer-administered test, or
  • 60 (less speaking component) on the IBT TOEFL.

Applicants to the School of Health Professions (MS in Nutrition) must present minimum TOEFL scores of:

  • 600 on the paper-administered test, or

  • 75 (less speaking component) on the IBT TOEFL.

Applicants to the School of Education must present minimum TOEFL scores of:

  • 575 on the paper-administered test, or
  • 233 on the computer-administered test, or
  • 68 (less speaking component) on the IBT TOEFL.

Am I required to have TWE and TSE scores?

Applicants to the School of Education must present Test of Written English (TWE) and Test of Spoken English (TSE) scores in addition to the minimum TOEFL scores. The minimum TWE scores is 4.5 or 22 on the Interent Based Test (IBT) Writing Section; the minimum TSE score is 4.5 or 22 on the Internet Based (IBT) Speaking Section. *Please note, the TSE and TWE are part of the IBT TOEFL exam.

Can I substitute any other test for the TOEFL?

You cannot substitute any other test for the TOEFL.

Under what circumstances will Hunter College waive the TOEFL requirement?

Hunter College does not waive the TOEFL under any circumstances.

When should I take the TOEFL?

The test should be taken at least 6 weeks before the application deadline to ensure timely receipt by the admissions office.

For how long are TOEFL scores valid?

TOEFL scores are valid for two years from the date taken. If you have taken the test earlier and ETS will no longer report your scores, you do not have to re-take the test as long as you can provide us with a record of your scores. We will consider your application as long as you can provide us with a copy of your student score report.
