Admission Requirements:

You must meet the following minimum requirements in order to be considered for admission.  Meeting these minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance to the program.

  • A bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution comparable in standard and content to a bachelor’s degree from Hunter College.
  • Minimum undergraduate grade point average of 3.0.
  • Official score report of the GRE (For information on taking the GRE, visit www.GRE.org).
  • 15 credits of communication sciences and disorders prerequisite courses (a minimum grade point average of A- is expected) to include the following courses or the equivalents:
      • Introduction to Language Science (COMSC 604)
      • Phonetics of American English (COMSC 607)
      • Speech and Its Production (Anatomy & Physiology) (COMSC 615)
      • Introduction to Speech-Language Pathology (COMSC 620)
      • Introduction to Audiology (COMSC 640)
  • 15 credits of ASHA requirements in the basic and applied sciences to include:
      • 3 credits in biological sciences
      • 3 credits in physical sciences
      • 3 credits in mathematics or statistics
      • 6 credits in social sciences
  • 15 additional credits in liberal arts and sciences to include:
      • 3 credits in English
      • 3 credits in English/written expression
      • 3 credits in the arts
      • 3 credits in a language other than English
      • 3 credits in U.S. history or U.S. political science
  • Two letters of recommendation from appropriate academic or professional sources.
  • A statement of purpose of approximately 500 words describing your objectives in undertaking graduate study in the desired specialization. In reviewing applications, considerable importance is placed on the applicant’s interest in and commitment to advanced study and professional development.
  • Applicants whose native language is not English and who have taken all or part of their undergraduate education in a country where English is not the native language are required to submit scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The following minimum scores must be obtained:
      • Paper Based Test: 550
      • Computer Administered Test: 213
      • Internet Based Test: 60 (less speaking component)
