PhD in Nursing

 

This post-master's PhD degree in Nursing prepares nurse scientists to conduct research that supports health equity by addressing the health of diverse, urban individuals; families; and communities.

 

Admission Requirements:

  • A master's degree from a regionally accredited institution with a minimum GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.
  • License and current registration to practice professional nursing in New York State.
  • Completion of a graduate-level statistics course in the last 5 years with a grade of B or better.
  • Previous coursework in graduate-level research methods.
  • A statement of purpose describing your career goals, including reason for interest in Hunter College. Please describe a proposed area of research, including research interest that match Hunter faculty expertise.
  • Writing sample (publication or graded paper): Submit a sample that reflects your writing ability, preferably a graduate research paper on a topic related to your proposed area of interest. We recommend a paper of at least 5 pages in length, saved as a .pdf, but there is no page limit.
  • Three letters of recommendation, one of which must be from a PhD-prepared faculty that addresses the student's aptitude for doctoral study.
  • Satisfactory interview.
  • Applicants whose native language is not English and who have taken all or part of their undergraduate education in a country where English is not the native language are required to submit scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The following minimum scores must be obtained:
      • TOEFL iBT: 80/ Paper Based Test: 550/ Computer Administered Test: 213
      • IELTS: 6.5 Overall Band Score

 

Application Deadline: December 15th for Summer 2024

Please Note: The PhD in Nursing program officially starts in the Summer. However, when completing the online application you need to select the Fall option as the potential start date. There is no Summer option in the online application system.
