Applicants who have completed all or part of their university studies in a non-US institution and/or require student visas must submit their applications no later than February 1  to be considered for Fall admission and September 15 to be considered for Spring admission.

Admission Requirements:

You must meet the following minimum requirements in order to be considered for admission.  Meeting these minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance to the program.

  • Two letters of recommendation from appropriate academic or professional references.
  • A statement of purpose of approximately 500 words or fewer describing your academic interest in art history, relevant educational and professional experience, reasons for wanting to pursue an MA degree, long-term career objectives, and how attending Hunter College will help you achieve your goals. In reviewing applications, considerable importance is placed on the applicant’s interest in and commitment to advanced study and professional development.
  • A writing sample is required for applicants to the M.A. Program in Art History, preferably an undergraduate research paper or thesis on a topic related to your proposed area of concentration (but please submit your best work even if it does not conform to this preference). We recommend a paper of 15 to 20 pages, saved as a .pdf, but there is no page limit. Your document may include accompanying illustrations and bibliography. Please create your document using either Times New Roman or Arial font.
  • Applicants whose native language is not English and who have taken all or part of their undergraduate education in a country where English is not the native language are required to submit scores on the Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The following minimum scores must be obtained:
      • TOEFL iBT: 80/ Paper Based Test: 550/ Computer Based Test: 213
      • IELTS: 6.5 Overall Band Score
