Applicants who have completed all or part of their university studies in a non-US institution and/or require student visas must submit their applications no later than February 1  to be considered for Fall admission and September 15 to be considered for Spring admission.

Admission Requirements:

You must meet the following minimum requirements in order to be considered for admission.  Meeting these minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance to the program.

  • Minimum undergraduate grade point average 3.0.
  • Completed an undergraduate concentration in music, with at least 29 credits or their equivalent, which must include: three semesters of music history, four semesters of music theory and four semesters of musicianship (sight singing, ear training, and keyboard studies).
  • Also, must have at least elementary facility at the keyboard and a reasonable mastery of an instrument (which may be a keyboard instrument) or voice.
  • In addition, you must submit to the department a sample of work in the area in which you plan to concentrate: an audition for performers and MA-TEP; a portfolio of compositions for composers (please send links for sound files to the graduate advisor); or one or two research papers on a musical subject for music historians, theorists, and ethnomusicologists. Students who plan to pursue mixed programs must submit a sample work in their strongest area.   • Two letters of recommendation from appropriate academic or professional references
  • A statement of purpose of approximately 500 words describing your objectives in undertaking graduate study. In reviewing applications, considerable importance is placed on the applicant’s interest in and commitment to advanced study and professional development.
  • Applicants whose native language is not English and who have taken all or part of their undergraduate education in a country where English is not the native language are required to submit scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)  or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The following minimum scores must be obtained:
      • TOEFL iBT: 80/ Paper Based Test: 550/Computer Based Test: 213
      • IELTS: 6.5 Overall Band Score
