Program Description

Mentoring

The after-school program is held at Harlem Renaissance High School and Hunter College throughout the week. The after-school program is held from 3:30-5:30 on Mondays and Thursdays at Harlem Renaissance and from 3:00-5:00 on Tuesdays at Hunter College.  The program consists of mentoring, tutoring, SAT/ACT/Regents prep, life skills activities, college exploration, games, field trips and more.  All mentors and tutors are supervised by M.S.W. and L.M.S.W. certified staff.

There are other opportunities throughout the school day at both of our partner schools in which mentors and tutors can get involved.  Our program staff teach Advisory classes, SAT preparation classes, and college application workshops, among others, and often seek support from mentors and tutors to work individually or in small groups with students during these classes.

Finally, we encourage mentors and tutors to work one-on-one with students outside of the weekly structured after-school program and daily classes.  The mentors and students can coordinate their individual schedules to accommodate this individual work either on-site at the partner school, at Hunter College, or in a public environment.

As programming changes each semester, if you are interested in learning more about becoming a mentor/tutor and what the programming schedule is, please review the following information and contact us at the start of the semester! There are three ways Hunter students can get involved in as a mentor/tutor for our program:

Testimonials

The HCLPP always offers me and other students many opportunities. They help to prepare students for college and for life after high school. Without them, there would be no individual and personal guidance as to which way to go after high school, or how to be become the greatest person one can be.

- Cinetta, HCLPP Student

They gave me the support that I was not getting at home and helped open my eyes and see the best future I can have.

 -Yusmary, HCLPP Alumni

I learned how to become a better educator because of the personal time I was able to spend with my students. The students and I have formed such a strong bond that we keep pushing ourselves to try our best because we do not want to let each other down. HCLPP has refined my outlook on teaching and has truly helped me reach my potential as an educator.

 -Sajeda, HCLPP Mentor
