Jason Corburn, PhD

Associate Director, COEH

 

Dr. Jason Corburn is the Associate Director of the Center for Occupational and Environmental Health at Hunter College. His background is in urban environmental planning and public health with a focus on assessing community-based health hazards, particularly addressing issues of environmental justice. Dr. Corburn has worked as an environmental-health community organizer in Seattle, Boston and New York City. He was also a senior environmental planner for the New York City Department of Environmental Protection. He has taught environmental policy and planning as well as conflict resolution at both MIT and Harvard University. Dr. Corburn's research focuses on how community-generated local knowledge can combine with traditional science to address environmental exposure and disease disparities. His work also focuses on exploring the role of intermediaries in developing participatory research partnerships between academics and community-based organizations. In a third project, Dr. Corburn is exploring ways to re-couple the fields of urban planning and public health. His work has been published in Environmental Health Perspectives, the Journal of Environmental Management, and Environmental Conservation, as well as numerous popular publications. Dr. Corburn holds both a Masters in City Planning (1996) and a Ph.D. (2002) in Urban Environmental Planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
