Community Health Worker Project
The Community Health Worker Project at Hunter College seeks to expand and support the important role of Community Health Workers (CHWs) in ensuring access to health care services for New York City's most vulnerable residents.
Current Activities of the project include:
- CHW Network of NYC brings together over 200 CHW members from 90 organizations with monthly meetings that draw 15-20 active participants. Incorporation as 501c3 in process.
- Outreach 2002 first ever conference led by CHWs in NYC held on June 18, 2002 with 120 participants
- CHW Network WEBsite established as resource for CHWs in NYC at www.chwnetwork.org
- CHW Advisory Committee with 15 members from various sectors of the health care community in NYC meets quarterly to advise project
- National leadership is provided by CHW Project staff in American Public Health Association CHW SPIG, in newly-forming National CHW Federation, at national CHW conferences, and in network of college-supported CHW training programs
- Policy leadership is provided by CHW project on issues such as national credentialing and certification of CHWs, sustainable funding of CHW projects, and proposed certification of asthma educators that would impact CHW role
CHW Research Agenda is developed including database and tools for labor market survey of CHW field in NYC, and proposals for cost-benefit and qualitative research with CHW model programs in NYC.
