Hazardous Materials & Emergency Response Training

In 2009, the COEH trained over 550 New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) employees in the Annual 8-Hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) Refresher Training Course, which was given in various regional locations across New York State.

A group of forty (40) individuals, primarily comprised of various College and University Laboratory Health & Safety Officers and other assorted professionals, participated in the open enrollment 8-Hour HAZWOPER Annual Refresher Training Course, which was given at Hunter College's Brookdale Campus.

Please follow the links below for examples of class materials from our 8-hour Hazardous Waste Worker Training course. The articles above are available in Adobe PDF format. If you do not have Adobe PDF Reader, you can download it for free from Adobe.

COEH also offers the 40-Hour HAZWOPER Initial Training Course to both Hunter College graduate students of the Urban Public Health Program and Medgar Evers College undergraduate students. Several students from both programs have received this valuable training which is required by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for individuals who work at hazardous waste sites and facilities.

In response to the importance of domestic preparedness training highlighted by the terrorist events of September 11, 2001, and other related activities, such as the anthrax releases in various federal buildings, COEH received funding from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), under their Hazmat Disaster Preparedness Training (HDPT) grant, to create a three-day training course in Chemical, Biological, and Radiological Weapons. The presentation may be found at the NIEHS Worker Educational Training Program (WETP) site: If you are having difficulty in downloading these presentations, please go to the NIEHS WETP website directly at : Issues in Domestic Preparedness: Chemical, Biological, and Radiological Weapons
