Mapping Air Pollution and Asthma

This project is mapping hazardous air pollutants and asthma prevalence across NYC and focusing in on the Greenpoint/Williamsburg(G/W) neighborhood of Brooklyn.

The project is funded by the Agency for Toxic Substances Disease Registry (ATSDR), under grant ##U50/ATU272296.

The project combines asthma hospitalization data for the years 1997-2000, and air toxics data modeled at the census-tract level from the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) National Air Toxics Assessment Database.

We are analyzing the spatial relationships between exposure to hazardous air pollutant (HAPs) and asthma prevalence, as measured by hospitalization data from the New York State Department of Health. The study is using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) spatial data analyses tools, and mapping the results by neighborhoods in NYC.

SAMPLE MAPS:
1) Average asthma hospitalizations, 1997-2000, by NYC census tract.
2) Diesel Particualte Matter concentrations across NYC, 1996.
3) Modeled lifetime Cancer Risk from HAPs inhalation in selected neighborhoods in NYC.
4) Density of Environmental Protection Agency, Toxic Release Inventory sites, across NYC, 2002.
