Neighborhood Effects and Health Disparities

This research project investigated how characteristics of the built and social environments act as key determinants of health disparities in low-income urban neighborhoods. The research was developing spatial analyses using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to simultaneously consider the impacts of:
  • Land use and zoning
  • Infrastructure quality, parks and open space
  • Housing quality, availability and affordability
  • Transportation routes
  • Commercial and economic development, including supermarkets and other services
  • Crime, safety and incarceration
  • Social networks, cohesion and collective efficacy
In order to study particular neighborhood health indicators, including:
  • Self-rated health status
  • Asthma hospitalizations
  • Sexually transmitted diseases
  • Childhood obesity
  • Infectious disease rates, including HIV
  • Mental health
