Neighborhood Effects and Health Disparities
This research project investigated how characteristics of the built and social environments act as key determinants of health disparities in low-income urban neighborhoods. The research was developing spatial analyses using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to simultaneously consider the impacts of:
- Land use and zoning
- Infrastructure quality, parks and open space
- Housing quality, availability and affordability
- Transportation routes
- Commercial and economic development, including supermarkets and other services
- Crime, safety and incarceration
- Social networks, cohesion and collective efficacy
In order to study particular neighborhood health indicators, including:
- Self-rated health status
- Asthma hospitalizations
- Sexually transmitted diseases
- Childhood obesity
- Infectious disease rates, including HIV
- Mental health
