Undergraduate Program

Adolescence Education Requirements

Undergraduate Major Requirements
(for majors declared as of 9/1/01)

The History major consists of 30 credits, as follows:

A maximum of 9 credits in 100-level courses.
A minimum of 18 credits in advanced-level course
(6 cr. in 200-level courses and 12 cr in 300-level courses).
HIST 300 (Historical Research) , taken twice, each time in connection with an upper-level history course.
Within the courses taken to fulfill the major requirement, students must take a minimum of 6 credits in United States history, 6 credits in European history, and 6 credits in World/non-Western/Latin American history.
HIST 300 must be taken twice (1.5 credits each) -- each time in connection with an approved upper-level history course. Students must obtain written permission from the instructor of the advanced-level course (approval forms may be obtained from the History Department) and registration permission from the History Department prior to registration. Students may not register for more than one HIST 300 project in a given semester.

History majors are encouraged to take at least 3 credits in an advanced seminar or problems course (HIST 382, 383, 384, 385, 483, 484, 485, 492) or to take HIST 400 (Historiography).

Minors: History majors must complete a minor and may select from any academic department or program listed in the current Hunter College catalog. A minor consists of 12 credits - 6 credits of which must be in courses numbered 200 or higher - chosen from one field or, with history department permission, two fields, of study. 6 credits of course work taken for the minor may be used to satisfy the distribution requirement, provided that it also includes 6 credits of more advanced work (200-level or higher) in the same subject.

The History Department will waive the requirement of completing a minor for students satisfying the requirements for a double major provided the minor requirement is waived by the second major department as well.

ADOLESCENCE EDUCATION ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Students wishing to enter the adolescence education sequence must meet the following criteria:

A minimum of 65 credits, but no more than 90 credits.
GPA of at least 2.8. If a student has more than 6 credits of CR/NC grades, the excess of these grades will be calculated as "C" or "F" in determining whether the student meets the minimum GPA.

Formal declaration of a major in history or geography.
Submission of an application to the sequence (available in the Office of Educational Services, Room HW1000) along with proof of a negative finding on a tuberculosis test.

In addition to completing a major of at least 33 credits in history or geography, applicants must complete a general education core that includes specific course requirements listed below, all of which can be fulfilled as part of the College distribution requirement of 40-54 credits.

ENGL 120 (English Composition)

12 credits in math/science/technology to include one laboratory science course and STAT 113.
12 credits of study in a language other than English (or exemption by the College on the basis of equivalency).
