Adolescence Education
Requirements
Undergraduate Major Requirements
(for majors declared as of 9/1/01)
The History major consists of 30 credits, as
follows:
A maximum of 9 credits in 100-level courses.
A minimum of 18 credits in advanced-level course
(6 cr. in 200-level courses and 12 cr in 300-level
courses).
HIST 300 (Historical Research) , taken twice,
each time in connection with an upper-level history
course.
Within the courses taken to fulfill the major
requirement, students must take a minimum of 6
credits in United States history, 6 credits in
European history, and 6 credits in World/non-Western/Latin
American history.
HIST 300 must be taken twice (1.5 credits each)
-- each time in connection with an approved upper-level
history course. Students must obtain written permission
from the instructor of the advanced-level course
(approval forms may be obtained from the History
Department) and registration permission from the
History Department prior to registration. Students
may not register for more than one HIST 300 project
in a given semester.
History majors are encouraged to take at least
3 credits in an advanced seminar or problems course
(HIST 382, 383, 384, 385, 483, 484, 485, 492)
or to take HIST 400 (Historiography).
Minors: History majors must complete a minor
and may select from any academic department or
program listed in the current Hunter College catalog.
A minor consists of 12 credits - 6 credits of
which must be in courses numbered 200 or higher
- chosen from one field or, with history department
permission, two fields, of study. 6 credits of
course work taken for the minor may be used to
satisfy the distribution requirement, provided
that it also includes 6 credits of more advanced
work (200-level or higher) in the same subject.
The History Department will waive the requirement
of completing a minor for students satisfying
the requirements for a double major provided the
minor requirement is waived by the second major
department as well.
ADOLESCENCE EDUCATION ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Students wishing to enter the adolescence education
sequence must meet the following criteria:
A minimum of 65 credits, but no more than 90
credits.
GPA of at least 2.8. If a student has more than
6 credits of CR/NC grades, the excess of these
grades will be calculated as "C" or
"F" in determining whether the student
meets the minimum GPA.
ENGL 120 (or a 200 or 300 level writing course
such as ENGL 201) with a grade of B or better.
Formal declaration of a major in history or geography.
Submission of an application to the sequence (available
in the Office of Educational Services, Room HW1000)
along with proof of a negative finding on a tuberculosis
test.
In addition to completing a major of at least
33 credits in history or geography, applicants
must complete a general education core that includes
specific course requirements listed below, all
of which can be fulfilled as part of the College
distribution requirement of 40-54 credits.
ENGL 120 (English Composition)
ENGL 220 (Introduction to Literature)
Two courses selected from HIST 151 (US from the
Colonial Era to the Civil War), HIST 152 (US from
the Civil War to the PResent), GEOG 101 (People
and their Environment).
12 credits in math/science/technology to include
one laboratory science course and STAT 113.
12 credits of study in a language other than English
(or exemption by the College on the basis of equivalency).
6 credits in the arts.
A course that includes a focus on communication,
which may be met through a variety of disciplines.
Courses in theater, media, and the linguistics
area of anthropology generally meet this requirement,
as does BLPR 181 (Language and Ethnic Identity).
TRANSFER STUDENTS
Transfer students with 60 or more credits who
have a GPA of at least 3.3 will be conditionally
admitted to the program without requiring that
they complete 12 credits at Hunter College. However,
a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8 at Hunter College
must be established to continue in the program
after the first semester.
Any transfer student who has a GPA of 2.8-3.29
must complete 12 credits at Hunter college with
a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8 before applying
to the program in adolescence education.
ADMISSIONS PROCESS
Students interested in applying to Adolescence
Education should plan to apply during the first
weeks of the semester prior to the semester in
which they plan to enroll.
Students must participate in a group interview
with several other students and School of Education
faculty members.
Students must complete an on-site writing sample
that the School of Education faculty will use
to assess written English skills.
