Really Cool Journalism Class...

Join an experiment in community journalism...

Neighborhood News (MEDP 299.70, section 001) will cover the South Bronx community of Hunts Point, posting stories about its people and institutions on a web site and publishing them in a community newspaper distributed to residents.

Hunts Point has plenty of both strengths and problems. Unemployment is high, residents are poor, and crime, though declining, remains a serious issue, as do asthma and other chronic health issues associated with poverty and pollution. In recent years, though, organizations like Mothers on the Move, Sustainable South Bronx and The Point CDC have raised environmental awareness, fought to create parks and improve schools, and founded exciting arts and theater programs to serve the neighborhood.

This class will continue the effort to produce a neighborhood news outlet. You can see the results at www.huntspointexpress.com.

In addition to students majoring in film & media, students in urban affairs, sociology, political science or English might find this course both challenging and enjoyable. It offers liberal arts students, regardless of their career goals, a way to learn to marshal and evaluate evidence and present it in an orderly and compelling fashion. For students who are exploring a career as journalists it offers an opportunity to report and write news in the real world, reaching an audience that will hold them accountable.

The syllabus and readings for this semester are on the Blackboard, and guest access is enabled, so you can check them out.

MEDP 299.70 will meet on Wednesdays from 9:45-12:45. Enrollment is limited. Hope to see some of you there.
N.B. No freshmen in this class; prerequisite is Basic Reporting, which is offered as an Honors Course next fall.

Bernard L. Stein
Professor of journalism

Movie Trivia

Two questions this week:

1. The word "plastics" is inextricably connected to one movie. What is it and why?

2. If you could choose any movie to show to people who need to understand what it means to be an "American," which would you choose and why?

Announcements for the Week of April 25-May 2, 2007

IMPORTANT!!

Registration for Fall 2007 Classes begins on Tuesday, May 8 at 10 :00 AM (although in the past it's been known to open up even earlier).

Please be sure to meet with your advisor well in advance of this date.

Later this week or early next week you'll receive, via email, the fall schedule of honors courses.

******************

Seniors!

Save the date of June 5, 2007, from 5:00 PM-7:00 PM for a reception for you and your family in that place you've called a home away from home for the past four years--the Lounge! Hang out with fellow seniors, introduce your family to your friends, and show your relatives your favorite seat--you know, the one where you got that great idea for a paper or found out you had won the lottery?

Invitations to follow....

***************

Juniors!

Are you a smart gal or guy who wants a swell postgraduate fellowship? You know--a Rhodes, Marshall, Gates, or similar fellowship?

If so, then come to a

POSTGRADUATE FELLOWSHIP MEETING

Thursday, May 3

4-6 PM

819 Hunter East

Speak with Dean Marcia Cantarella to learn all you need to know to get started in the application process. The deadline for all of these is early in the fall--i.e., just after we return to school in some cases. So that means doing some work over the summer.

All of us in the Honors College strongly encourage you to attend this meeting. Many, many of you will be very competitive in the hunt for these fellowships, and as we've seen already this year, it is possible to win them.

Light refreshments will be provided. Please RSVP to Dina Daoud at ddaoud@hunter.cuny.edu by May 1st.

So see your advisor if you have any questions, and put this meeting on your calendar today!

Movie Trivia of the Week

"Invasion of the Body Snatchers" is a classic 1950s film. On the surface it's about the pods coming down from outer space, which then inhabit humans and turn them into pod people who have no feelings, follow orders, etc.

Check out a clip here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3jSaLBcDAc

But what's the movie really about? (Hint: there are at least two interpretations....)

And...

The answer to last week's question:

"Repo Man" (1984)

INTERESTED IN ASIAN-AMERICAN STUDIES?

IF SO, READ ON!!

Dear fellow Honors College students,

As some of you may know, the Asian American Studies Department of Hunter College is in a very dire state. As of Spring 2007, there is no permanent head to lead the department and no office whatsoever. Because there is no department head, they are not accepting any new Asian American Studies Minors. All of this is due in part to a lack of funding and support from Hunter as well as from CUNY.

I am asking for your help to improve the sad situation of the Asian American Studies Department. We are looking for individuals who are extremely concerned about Asian American issues, and would like to help out with this project. It will be hard work, but any change requires a great deal of effort. Next semester, we hope to start petitions, sending mass letters to Hunter and CUNY administrations, collaborating with Hunter clubs, tabling/passing flyers to garner support from students, etc.

The AASD is in its current position because of a lack of student body concern. We need dedicated and motivated individuals who can advocate for our cause. If you are interested in helping out, or know anyone from Hunter who would, PLEASE contact me at olin1087@yahoo.com. We hope to start planning next week. Thank you!

Sincerely,

Olivia Lin

A Hole is to DIG...except at Hunter, where a DIG is...

Have you seen those psychedelic signs around campus? Wonder what they're for? Have you noticed that they all say "DIG" on them? Well, DIG stands for Degree Information for Graduation. It is a new computer program coming to Hunter for use by undergraduates enrolled after 2004.

GREAT. Why use it, you ask?

Well, for example, with DIG, you can keep track of your completion of GER's, P & D's, and major requirements. It will also give you course options for any requirement you haven't met. You also calculate what grades you need to obtain in certain courses to achieve your GPA goal. Basically, if you've ever wondered, what have I taken, what could I take, what will my GPA be, etc. DIG helps with that. And, when you're agonizing over those questions, say at 2 in the morning, DIG is there.

WOW. How can I use it, you ask?

1. Go to the CUNY portal www.cuny.edu and log-in.
2. Click on Student Advisement/Degree Audit.
3. DIG to your heart's content.

YAY. When is it available, you ask?

DIG comes to a computer near you, on 4/18.

Watch your SNet account for details and don't forget to join us for a hand's-on demo at the DIG Happening:

When: Wednesday, April 18, 2007
Where: West Lobby
Time: 1:00pm 6:00pm

Loooking forward to seeing your there!

As Austin Powers famously said,

Yeah, baby. I DIG it.

*******************

Make your Vote Count!!

Student Elections Are Coming: Get Involved!*
As we did so successfully the last three years, we will once again use web-based voting for undergraduate student elections this spring.

This technology, used by colleges and universities throughout the country, enables you to vote while at school, work or home. In addition to a computer you may have at home or work, there are many throughout campus from which you can also vote. By bringing the "polls" to you, making voting more convenient, we hope to see students taking part in the election process in even greater numbers. As you may know, when we used Web-based voting, participation increased significantly. In order to ensure the integrity of the election process, we have hired an outside company experienced with Web-based campus elections, and unaffiliated with Hunter College, to handle all aspects of the voting. Your Hunter email, which must be set up per the instructions below, will not be used by this company for any purpose other than this election.

When to Vote
Voting is scheduled to take place from Monday, April 23 (12:01 am) - Friday, April 27 (11:59 pm).

How to Vote
In order to vote on the web, you must set up your Hunter e-mail account. Please tell your friends that if they have not yet set up their Hunter e-mail, they should do so right away by going to the SNET Helpdesk in Room 109 North.

During the week of April 16, the company administering the election will send you an e-mail with a voter registration code, which you will need in order to vote. The voter registration code, along with instructions, will allow you to view and submit your ballot on the company's special Hunter elections website when the "polls" open on April 23. Election results will be posted on the election site immediately after the polls close. (Note: If others are able to access your e-mails, or if you think they have the ability to do so, you should make the necessary adjustments immediately).

What Positions Are on the Ballot
You will have the opportunity to vote, via the web, for the following 36 positions:

A) Seven Undergraduate Student Government Executive Officers:
President
Vice President
Finance Commissioner
Evening Affairs Commissioner
External Affairs/Public Relations Commissioner
Student Welfare/Academic Affairs Commissioner
Cultural Affairs/Student Activities Commissioner

(Note: Brookdale Commissioner will only be voted on by residents of the Brookdale Residence Hall. This voting will take place at the residence hall on Friday, April 27, 2007 from 9:30 am - 10:00 pm. Hunter ID will be required).

B) Fourteen Undergraduate Student Government Senators, including two freshmen, four sophomores, four juniors and four seniors.

C) College Association (4 positions available)

D) Auxiliary Enterprise Board (5 positions available)

E) Faculty Student Disciplinary Committee (6 positions available)

(Please check below to view the responsibilities of the aforementioned positions and an overview of the funds for which the student government is responsible. This information is also currently posted in the glass-enclosed "Elections" bulletin board on three West.)

Learn About the Candidates
The following information and events will assist you in selecting your candidates:

* Each candidate was asked to submit a 100 word campaign statement which will be posted on the election website, which you will be able to access the week of and the week prior to the election.

* All candidates were asked to participate in a "Candidate's Forum/Debate" to introduce themselves and their platform to the electorate. This will be held on Wednesday, April 18, at 1:00 pm in Room 714 West.

* By Tuesday, April 17, the list of candidates and their party affiliation, if any, will be posted in the glass-enclosed "Elections" bulletin board on Three West. This list will also be on this elections site the week of and the week prior to the election.

If you have any questions about student elections or web-based voting, please contact Dean Michael Escott in the Office of Student Services, Room 1103 East.

Your vote counts... use it wisely to determine who represents you next year.

Pre-Law Opportunity!

PRLDEF (The Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund) is now accepting applications for it's summer LawBound program. Several Hunter students have participated in this program each summer since its inception in 2005 and found it very worthwhile. This summer’s LAWbound Summer Academy will take place from August 13-17, 2007 from 10 AM to 4 PM. This year’s application deadline is June 22nd
For detailed information about the program and application criteria see below:

LAWbound seeks to provide targeted services that address some of the most common barriers to admission to law school, and help students effectively navigate the law school admissions process and underwrite their own success. The goal of the program is to improve access of Latino/a students to law school.

The Curriculum
Within the week-long intensive, LAWbound demystifies the law school application process, introduces legal methods and processes, covers the importance of course selection throughout a student’s undergraduate program to prepare for law school, and introduces career paths and options for law school graduates. Students have the opportunity to establish relationships and ask questions in informal, relaxed and social settings throughout the week with the Summer Academy Director, guest speakers and practitioners, and law student teaching assistants.
Students also visit practitioners in their professional settings. In the program’s first two years, LAWbound scholars have visited a judge’s chambers, a small private law practice, a major NY law firm, the NYS Attorney General’s Office, the Legal Aid Society and an area law school. Movie Trivia of the Week:

Which 1980s movie pointed out the oxymoronic irony of "jumbo shrimp"?

Honors College Announcements for the Week of April 11-18

Welcome Back!

We hope you had a great spring break. Of course, we don't need to tell you that there are only five weeks of classes left in the semester. If you're having trouble in any of your courses, don't hide! Make an appointment to see your advisor, or just come in. Now is the time to make sure that everything is going smoothly as we move into finals.

Some things to think about:

--Fall registration: we're not sure exactly when you'll register for classes, but it'll likely be around the second week of May. Therefore, make sure that you've met with your advisor prior to that time.

--Is everything as it should be regarding your GER progress? In other words, if you have questions about whether you've satisfied, say, PD/A, you should talk with your advisor.

FAFSA AND TAP!!

If you have not yet filled out your FAFSA (and, for NY residents, TAP), you must complete it ASAP!!

If you do not file these forms--every year--you may be held responsible for paying your tuition!! Yes, you are on a full scholarship, but that scholarship is dependent on, in part, federal and state funds. If you do not submit your forms then the school must cover those funds that the state or federal government would have paid for, and thus you will be held accountable. If you think you don't qualify for state or federal support you must still submit FAFSA and TAP.

Questions? Talk to your advisor or CJ.

This Week's History Trivia Question

Even though it's only 2007, the 2008 presidential election is heating up. Who will be the nominees for the Democrats and Republicans? Great questions, but not what we're interested in here.

What's more interesting is whether there will be a viable third party candidate. Maybe you remember Ralph Nader? Did he swing the election to the Republicans? That's a debate for another time. But the question of the week is:

Who was the most successful third party candidate in the 20th century (as measured by a percentage of the total vote)? What was the person's platform, and why was he/she so successful?

Bonus question: name your favorite 20th century 3rd party candidate and explain why he/she rocks your world.

Winners will receive a really cool, really valuable prize!

Post all answers on this blog!

Student Leadership Colloquium: “Leadership Values Auction”
This is the second of four presentations this semester. Students must attend all four presentations to receive the Certificate of Participation.

Presenter:Mr. Jerrell Robinson and Ms. Julie Agosto are the Assistant Director and Coordinator of Student Activities & Leadership Development, respectively, at Hunter College. Jerrell has both his B.A. in Sociology and M.S. in Counseling from SUNY Oswego, and has worked in higher education for over ten years. Julie received her B.F.A. in Public Relations from Long Island University, C.W. Post Campus and has worked in the areas of publicity, development, and higher education.

The Leadership Values Auction helps evaluate how people prioritize different leadership qualities in their peers. Our regard for one value over the other can alter our perception of person’s effectiveness as a leader.

In order to facilitate the process of prioritization, the participants will give a predetermined bidder an order to bid on the qualities used during the game. This also illustrates how a person reacts to competition, and any impact that may have on values and behavior in a group dynamic. Participants are encouraged to understand and respect values which are different from their own. Lastly, participants will begin to realize their own potential as leaders.
