Join us for a conversation and a sweet treat on Tuesday, October 23th at 9pm in Brookdale's East Lounge. Our distinguished guest will be Jessica Wamala.

Jessica Wamala is a global citizen, passionate about addressing social issues through financial inclusion, gender empowerment and capacity development efforts. Her concern for others, adaptability and energetic spirit have led her to live in or travel to 37 other countries since 2012 for business development, educational opportunities, academic conferences and research, immersive learning and cultural exchanges. Her interests and expertise sit at the nexus of gender and politics, working to innovate processes and drive organizational change around impact and diversity.

Currently, she is the Director of Growth in North America for Wave, where she is responsible for scaling the company’s diaspora user base. Wave is a secure, convenient, simple-to-use smartphone app that allows users to send money to Africa instantly and at no cost. Wave's mission is to make sending money anywhere in the world as easy and affordable as possible, saving users countless hours and tens of millions of dollars in transfer fees.

Previously, Jessica was a community development Peace Corps Volunteer near Fes, Morocco and served as the chairperson of the Gender and Development committee—a working group committed to facilitating idea-sharing and developing relevant resources for gender empowerment and advocacy among Volunteers and Moroccans. She has also advanced these issues for the U.S. State Department in various capacities and has published work on diversity in international affairs.

As a Rhodes Scholar originally from Massachusetts, she received an MPhil in Modern Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Oxford. Jessica holds an honors bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Arab and Islamic Studies and Global Interdisciplinary Studies and a second master’s degree in Political Science from Villanova University in Villanova, Pennsylvania. She also played NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball and was co-captain in the 2013/14 year.
