Jonathan Schoenwald, Director of the Macaulay Honors College at Hunter

Jonathan Schoenwald Jonathan Schoenwald is the director of the Macaulay Honors College at Hunter College. Jonathan comes to us from Princeton University, where he spent the past three years as the Director of Studies and then Dean of Rockefeller College. Born in Pittsburgh, he graduated from college in 1987, after which he worked for a number of years as a high school teacher and coach. A historian by training, Jonathan's research focuses on post-World War II American political culture, specifically examining the interrelationship between party politics, independent organizations, and popular culture, especially film. He has written widely on the rise of modern American conservatism from the late 1950s to the early 1970s. His current research project investigates the violent Left in America in the 1970s. Jonathan previously taught American history at the College of Wooster and humanities and history courses at Stanford. If he's not in his office, you might find Jonathan playing with his son in Central Park; swimming in the Hunter Pool; wandering through museums in the city; checking out photography galleries to add to his collection; running the Central Park loop; or exploring the city and all it has to offer.

Solita Alexander, Honors College Advisor

Solita Alexander Hello Hunter Honors Collegians! It's great to be amongst you and to be accompanying you on this part of your life's journey. As for my own journey, it has been full of many exciting twist and turns. My roots were planted in the country of Guyana, and after bursting on the scene in the country of Belize, I sprouted in White Plains, New York. I spent my college years at Harvard University, earning a BA in Anthropology, while preparing for medical school. However, by the time graduation came, I’d become interested in the public affairs of the inner-city and so I decided on to enter a different school... middle school. My journey took me to Chicago where I taught in middle school, before returning to Boston to teach high school and start up an after school program, taking a pause to live in Italy between the adventures in those two great cities. I returned to familiar neighborhoods, to complete my Ed.M in Counseling Psychology at Columbia University, where I also worked with students at Barnard College. The development of young people, particularly college students, and their environment continues to be of great importance to me, along with other interests like poetry, sports, travel and music I'd be happy to hear whatever you've got on shuffle in your iPod! And, I really look forward to hearing about your past adventures and those you aspire to undertake in the future. Together, we will work hard to make your aspirations a reality. Please feel free to stop in any time. See you soon...

Betsy Elias, Honors College Office Coordinator

Betsy Elias I am excited to be part of the Honors College, and to be back in New York City. For over 25 years I lived in NYC where I raised my son and worked in the book publishing industry. For the past seven years I have been living off of a dirt road in a tiny (but wonderful) town in Western MA, and have been working in Student Affairs at Smith College. Working with students is such a pleasure, and it will be gratifying if I can help them in any way through their undergraduate journey.
