Jonathan Schoenwald
Director of the Macaulay Honors College at Hunter College
Jonathan Schoenwald is the director of the Macaulay Honors College at
Hunter College. Jonathan comes to us from Princeton University, where
he spent three years as the Director of Studies and then Dean
of Rockefeller College. Born in Pittsburgh, he graduated from college
in 1987, after which he worked for a number of years as a high school
teacher and coach. A historian by training, Jonathan's research focuses
on post-World War II American political culture, specifically examining
the interrelationship between party politics, independent
organizations, and popular culture, especially film. He has written
widely on the rise of modern American conservatism from the late 1950s
to the early 1970s. His current research project investigates the
violent Left in America in the 1970s. Jonathan previously taught
American history at the College of Wooster and humanities and history
courses at Stanford. If he's not in his office, you might find Jonathan
playing with his three sons in Prospect Park; swimming in the Hunter Pool;
wandering through museums in the city; checking out photography
galleries to add to his collection; running the Prospect Park loop; or
exploring the city and all it has to offer.
