2.  Important Notice About Student Email!!

Student Email System Change, Effective November 21st!

The current student email system (“SNet”) is being converted to a new system this weekend.  Student email will be unavailable from 8:00pm Saturday night through 8:00am Sunday morning,

Students will need to register their accounts with NetID Central before using the new system.

3.  Extended Funding Opportunity ­ December 4

University Scholars can now apply for nine or ten semesters of tuition support. Applications from sophomores and juniors (only in exceptional cases from seniors) will be considered each year. The application deadline is December 4, 2009.

 

4.  Glamour’s 2010 Top 10 College Women Competition - Dec 1st

This competition recognizes the exceptional achievements and academic excellence of female college juniors.  This is an ideal opportunity for talented students to be rewarded for their leadership roles on campus and in the greater community.

Winners receive $3,000 and coverage in an issue of the magazine.

5.  Barbara Jordan Health Policy Scholars Program ­ Deadline December 4

 

 The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation is accepting applications for the 2010 Barbara Jordan Health Policy Scholars Program.

This intensive summer program provides college students with an opportunity to work on health policy issues in a congressional office, and to engage in original health policy research and analysis under the guidance of Foundation research staff.

College seniors and recent college graduates who have a strong interest in addressing racial and ethnic health disparities or who are themselves a member of a population that is adversely affected by racial and ethnic health disparities are eligible to apply.

The application deadline is 5pm ET on Friday, December 4.

7.   Attention Candidates for January Graduation: Commencement Countdown is Nov. 18th!

 

Hunter’s one-stop graduation fair for graduating students will be Wednesday, November 18, 2009 from 11:30am to 7:30pm in the Hunter West Lobby. 

All bachelor’s and master’s/advanced degree candidates for January graduation are welcome to attend and sign up for commencement tickets, order caps and gowns, check in with Degree Audit and much more!

8.  Weill Medical College of Cornell University Pre-Medical Conference ­ Saturday December 5

Weill Medical College of Cornell University proudly announces its Annual Regional Pre-Medical Conference.

Students will address health-care issues affecting the Black and Latino communities, attend workshops on preparing for a career in the health professions, and network with medical students, physicians, and administrators of color.

The conference is open to all high school and undergraduate college students interested in the Health and Medical Professions.

The event will take place from 9am – 4:30pm at Weill Cornell Medical College, Uris Auditorium, 1300 York Avenue (at 69th Street in Manhattan).

 Continental Breakfast and lunch will be served.

9.   Great Macaulay Events!

Art and Science Day at Macaulay ­ November 22

Sublimation, Freud says, creates both art and science. And yet how do these two seemingly binary opposites interplay? Can science inspire art? Can art influence science?

We invite artists and scientists at Macaulay to explore and discuss these topics with our four lecturers, all of whom weave science and art in their daily lives. Students not only passionate about work in arts and sciences but also excited about the dynamic tango between art and science are welcome to join us for a what will certainly be an electrifying and thought-provoking day!  Lunch will be served.

 

 

 

10.  Apply to be a Watson Fellow!!

Jeannette K. Watson Fellowship--
An Exceptional Program for First and Second Year Students

The Program gives promising and accomplished undergraduates the possibility of on-the-job learning that will provide opportunities for leadership and personal growth.  The Jeannette K. Watson Fellowship offers students the opportunity for paid internships of $5,000- $6,000 for three consecutive summers.

Interns will explore work in nonprofit organizations, government service, private enterprise and a summer abroad. The internship will be developed in consultation with the Fellow in terms of the Fellow's growing interests.

 To be eligible, by the time of application, you must be a second semester freshman or sophomore.  Candidates must be no older than 25 years old as of March l, 2010 and must be a US citizen or "green card" holder.

Interested students will submit the application to Hunter’s campus representative, Myrna Fader, Office of Student Services.  The campus deadline is February 1, 2010.

11.   Some Great Macaulay Internship Opportunities!

The American Society of Magazine Editors Summer Internship Program

 The American Society of Magazine Editors summer internship program is intended for editorially oriented college juniors.

The emphasis is on editing magazines, and includes the performance under supervision of such tasks as handling reader mail, evaluating unsolicited manuscripts, researching articles, checking facts, proofreading, copy editing, interviewing, covering press conferences, and attending editorial meetings.

At a number of magazines, there may also be reporting and writing opportunities ­even a few bylines. Some interns have the opportunity to see how the circulation, advertising, and other business departments of the magazine function. During the program there are weekly luncheons where interns meet and visit with a varied group of editors and other magazine professionals.

 

 

 

Paid Internship for Web Coders with MediaMidrash

MediaMidrash is an innovative educational technology startup co-founded by a Macaulay Honors College alumnus.

MediaMidrash seeks to raise the quality of Jewish education by offering teachers easy access to 21st century multimedia technologies.

MediaMidrash is offering an exciting paid internship opportunity to a current qualified Macaulay student. The ideal intern is a web coder with knowledge of PHP, MySQL, and/or Javascript. An interest in the intersection of technology and education is also a plus

The specifics of the internship will be determined by the intern's skills and interests, but the intern should be able to design something concrete to tuck into their portfolio to show off for future internships or employers.

 

12.  Internships - American Cancer Society

 The American Cancer Society is the nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service.

 Looking for an opportunity that will test your business skills and prepare you to meet the demands of a challenging workforce?  Interested in developing a business case, working on marketing ideas, event and relationship management?

 Special Events Intern - Learn to provide resources and staff support to communities and organizations by assisting in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of American Cancer Society fundraising activities.

Involves all aspects of event planning (Relay for Life, Making Strides against Breast Cancer, Gala and other fundraising projects.) Partner with volunteers to successfully carry out fundraising activities.

Skills:  
* Basic computer skills, good written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment are required skills.
* Well organized.
* Must be professional, dependable, resourceful, and able to meet project deadlines, and energetic.

Patient Navigation Intern - In office volunteer needed to assist Patient and Family Services department with the daily incoming phone contacts, follow up with patient requests, contact with medical professionals (i.e.: social workers, medical oncologist, surgeons) to advocate and assist the patient and their family members through the health care system.

Extensive training involved. This volunteer position is during regular business hours.

Skills:
* Ability to manage confidential matters.
* Ability to communicate effectively with the general public, patients, family members and friends, health professionals and volunteers.
* Excellent telephone etiquette
* Knowledge of MS Office – Word, Excel, PowerPoint, database applications and general office equipment and procedures.

13.  Macaulay News !

Winter Session Tuition Policy:

University Scholars studying at one of the senior CUNY colleges, one class up to 4 credits will be covered by the tuition waiver. Scholars taking more courses/credits will be responsible for the additional tuition charges.

For University Scholars studying abroad, one class up to 4 credits will be covered by the tuition waiver. University Scholars taking more than one class, or more than 4 credits, will have to receive approval from Macaulay to have the additional tuition covered.

Please note that University Scholars will be liable for all charges - including tuition - due to late program changes, dropping, or withdrawing from a course.

15.  Do Ethics Have a Place in Society?


Elie Wiesel Prize in Ethics Essay Contest – Deadline: January 10, 2010

The Elie Wiesel Prize in Ethics Essay Contest 2010 is now open. 

This national competition, open to full-time juniors and seniors, is designed to challenge college students to analyze today’s urgent ethical issues. The Foundation will select five winners in this national competition. Hunter College has had a winner! At the Foundation’s website you may read the winning essay of David Greven, Hunter’s 1996 winner.

16.  Spring Semester in Albany

The New York State Assembly Session Intern Program offers a full-time, spring semester long internship. CUNY students who participate in the Assembly and Senate undergraduate internship programs receive supplementary awards from CUNY to cover additional costs such as tuition for the semester ($6,140 total). The Albany internship programs enable students from CUNY to experience the practical dimensions of New York State government, and legislative politics from both the inside, and outside. Students perform substantive work such as research on state legislation, assistance in drafting bills, constituent service, and other legislative tasks.
