5. Feit Seminars at Baruch--Spring 2009
THE FEIT INTERDISCIPLINARY SEMINARS IN THE HUMANITIES
Eros and Politics
IDC 4050H MW6H Code 1884
M/W 6:00-7:15 pm
Ben Fontana, Political Science
Ali Nematollahy, Modern Languages
“Love of one is a barbarism; for it is exercised at the expense of all others.” In this maxim, Nietzsche suggests that desire, at least a certain form of it, is antithetical to social and political life. In the Symposium and Phaedrus, however, Plato considered Eros as the true foundation of all communal existence. This course will study the role played by Eros in politics from Antiquity to the twentieth century. We will pay particular attention to the connections of Eros with democratic, totalitarian and other mass political movements of the twentieth century. We will examine such thinkers as Plato, Aristotle, Machiavelli, Rousseau, Sade, Freud, Marcuse and Foucault, among others.
Sports in Society
IDC 4050H SY1H Code 1851
M 2:05-5:00 pm
Shaun Assael, ESPN
Josh Mills, Journalism
Sport is part of the glue that binds people together, reaching across generations, neighborhoods, cities, nations, linking peoples of different races and ethnic groups with a common interest. Sport also constitutes an enormous international business, generating tens of billions of dollars in revenue –a process quickened by globalization--and sometimes drawing heavily on the public purse. This is true not just at the professional level, but in amateur sports as well; in the United States, for instance, one or two teams may be the engine of wealth creation for an entire university’s physical activities program. Through reading, research, and discussion, members of this seminar will explore sports of all kinds, monitoring their social contributions, environmental impact, labor relations, economic consequences, political influence, and integrity.
If you're interested in either class, get in touch ASAP with Professor Paula Bergren ( Paula.Berggren@baruch.cuny.edu ). After receiving approval from Professor Bergren, Hunter students can begin the registration process for these seminars through the epermit system. Epermits are initiated through the CUNY portal, www.cuny.edu Detailed instructions are available on the epermit site. Let your adviser know if you plan to include one of these courses in your spring 2009 schedule!

8. Pre-Law News: Look or Be Sued!
A. January Moot Court Class
Last year, we offered a January term moot court course that received excellent feedback from all involved. We are pleased to offer this course in 2009 again taught by alum., Andrea Weiss, who formerly served as a District Attorney, U.S. Attorney, and is now in private practice. This is a great course for a student looking for a challenge in January and interested in improving advocacy and public speaking skills. For the final, each student argues before a three judge panel in a courtroom. Please let your students know about this opportunity. There is no description online - it is listed in the January term as an independent study in the Political Science Department.
MOOT COURT – JANUARY 2009
Instructor: Andrea Likwornik Weiss, J.D.
What does it mean to “think like a lawyer?” How do lawyers make legal arguments to advance their client’s cause? Why are there always at least two sides to any issue, and how is it that a good lawyer can persuasively argue every side? How do we find and capitalize on the flaws in our adversaries’ arguments, and find and address the flaws in our own? What happens when the law conflicts with our ideas of good policy?
This class will explore these issues using a hypothetical lawsuit involving a question of constitutional law. As each student prepares to deliver an oral argument of the case, we will work on learning basic concepts of legal reasoning, using precedent to support one’s case (and impeach our adversary’s case), answering hard questions under pressure, and making a polished and professional presentation to the court that will decide the case. Writing assignments will include briefing Supreme Court cases to understand their full meaning and their implications for our hypothetical case. Class instruction will include use of the Socratic Method, requiring student preparation and participation. The class will culminate in an oral argument delivered by each student to a panel of judges.
Note: The course is listed on the Registrar’s site as being offered Tues., Thurs. from 5:00 – 7:30. The instructor plans to hold the course from 5:45 – 8:15. To register you will need the permission of the Poli Sci. department. Please contact Prof. Walter Volkomer at wvolkome@hunter.cuny.edu or call the Poli Sci. department at 772-5500.
B. January Legal Writing Course
In the January term, the Poli Sci. department is pleased to offer a new course in legal writing. Please contact the department for information regarding registration.
