Frank the cost to eligible students will be $500.00.  Further funding is available

ARAB CINEMA IN TRANSLATION
ARB 251 and FILM 299.53, Fall 2009
Professor: Christopher Stone
Monday, Thursday 11:10-12:25
E-mail: cst@hunter.cuny.edu

It is a little-known fact that the third most productive film industry in the world resides in
Egypt. Important cinematic cultures have also developed in Lebanon, Syria, Palestine,
Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco. Many see the origins of Arab cinema as coinciding with
the struggle for national independence and as such Arab cinema has often been viewed
through the lens of colonialism and post-colonialism. The course will focus on this and
other aspects of Arab cinema such as aesthetics, the role of melodrama, the importance of  music and dance, the phenomenon of co-production with western countries and the
treatment of gender and sexuality. We will watch black and white classics from Egypt
such as Determination, The Flirtation of Girls, The Beginning and the End. We will also
watch more recent films from Egypt and the rest of the Arab World such as Terror and
Barbeque (Egypt) , The Silence of the Palaces (Tunisia) and The Dupes (Syria).
No knowledge of Arabic is required for this course. All films will be subtitled.
Fulfills Pluralism and Diversity Group A and GER Core Requirement Stage 2, Group D.
Students will have to write several film reviews throughout the semester, write a final paper and do a short presentation based on their final paper topic.

A class in real world journalism

Students in Neighborhood News produce a website and a community newspaper covering the South Bronx community of Hunts Point.

The Hunts Point Express has been hailed by residents and community organizations for its hard-hitting stories on environmental justice issues, schools, housing, health and crime, and its vivid feature stories about daily life in a poor and underserved section of our city.
The class offers students who are exploring a career as journalists the opportunity to report and write news in the real world, reaching an audience that will hold them accountable. In addition, it offers liberal arts students in any department a way to learn to marshal and evaluate evidence and present it in an orderly and compelling fashion.
The on-line edition also gives students a place to experiment with new ways to tell stories using video, audio and interactive tools.
Students leave the class with a portfolio of published work that has led previous students to jobs and paid internships at news organizations, including the New York Times on-line and PBS.

To view The Hunts Point Express, go to www.huntspointexpress.com.

Neighborhood News,
MEDP 377, Section 001,
will meet on Wednesdays from 10:10am-1pm.
Enrollment is limited.
Hope to see you there.
Bernard L. Stein
Professor of journalism
