Honors College Announcements for the Week of May 11-17, 2011
1. TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Meet The Other Wes Moore: A Conversation with the Best-selling Author
Date: Wednesday, May 11
Time: 4:00 pm
Place: Faculty Dining Room, West Building, 8th Floor
Wes Moore is a youth advocate, Army combat veteran, business leader, and NY Times best-selling author. Moore graduated Phi Theta Kappa as a commissioned officer from Valley Forge Military College and Phi Beta Kappa from Johns Hopkins University in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in International Relations. He completed an MLitt in International Relations as a Rhodes Scholar in 2004, and was named one of Ebony magazine’s “Top 30 Leaders Under 30” for 2007.
On December 11, 2000, The Baltimore Sun ran an article about how Moore, despite his troubled childhood, had just received The Rhodes Scholarship. At the same time, The Sun was running stories about four African-American men who were arrested for the murder of an off-duty Baltimore police officer during an armed robbery. One of the men convicted was just two years older than Moore, lived in the same neighborhood, and in an uncanny turn, was also named Wes Moore. Moore couldn’t shake off the unsettling coincidence, or the inkling that the two shared much more than space in the same newspaper. Told in alternating dramatic narratives that take the reader from heart-wrenching losses to moments of surprising redemption, The Other Wes Moore tells the story of a generation of boys trying to find their way in a challenging and, at times, hostile world.
Don’t miss this opportunity to hear Wes Moore speak here at Hunter College!

I am a junior at the Hunter Macaulay Honors College. I recently interviewed for and accepted an internship position as Creative Administrative Assistant at Buttafly Unltd, Inc.
Buttafly Unltd, Inc is a company that sells fashionable T-shirts, accessories, and handbags that celebrate individuality. They also have a side mission and objective: to promote hair in its natural state, and teach people how to take care of it naturally as opposed to resorting to highly processed hair on a frequent basis.

The full-fledged website is scheduled to be up and running soon (perhaps by Thursday of this week).
Upcoming company events include a children's workshop that teach parents how to take care of their childrens' hair (esp for parents who adopt a child of a different race than themselves); a commercial shoot for a hair salon, and regularly blogging about celebrities that sport natural hair, intriguing beard designs, and also following models' lives.
One of my tasks is to find another intern, a Social Networking Intern. Ideally, we are looking for someone who is a strong writer, and is interested in blogging about Buttafly Unltd's events on Facebook and making Twitter posts.
The events to be blogged about include interviews, workshops, and meet-and-greets. This is a very exciting time to be involved with our company, seeing as how we're about to launch the full-fledged version of our website, create a film project, and video magazines.
The job description is as follows:
Title: Social Networking Intern
Hours/Week: 16
Work Site: Mostly Home. Travel to events, photo shoots, Workshops
(mostly in NYC)
How Often Travel: 2/3 days a month (each day, 1-3 hours at event)

position, please email me (PPAREDES239@HOTMAIL.COM) for more information. Although this is an unpaid internship, those of you who are interested in gaining experience will not be disappointed. As previously mentioned, you will be surrounded by TV commercial production, model interviews, film and other media production projects.
Finally, if you have all the information you need, and would like to apply, please submit a creative writing sample according to the following:
~Pretend you are covering Prince William and Kate Middleton's
wedding. You must write a blog entry, as long as you desire, but at least two paragraphs, on the momentous occasion. Be yourself (add some zest), and cover all the important details (who, what, when, where, why, how--details can be fictional for this exercise. For the internship, blog posts must contain accurate facts, however).
