Department of Biological Sciences
Departmental Honors Program

In order to be eligible for honors in the Department of Biological Sciences, a student must have a 3.5 or greater GPA in Biology courses. The student must take at least two credits of research in the BIOL 480 series and write and submit a paper to the department on the research project. In both cases a grade of B+ or better is expected for Honors. (The Biology curriculum is currently being revised so that certain 300 and 400 level courses will be research courses enabling the student to be eligible for honors if their grades are above 3.5.)

Students who wish to undertake a research project under the supervision of a faculty member must first obtain written permission from that faculty member and then register for BIOL 480 – 483. Research opportunities for outstanding undergraduates are available in cell and molecular, developmental biology, neuroscience, cancer biology, AIDS, microbiology and a variety of other contemporary areas. In some cases students may be permitted to work at one of the several neighboring research institutions. Synopses of faculty research interests can be obtained from the departmental web site.
